NJSIAA Playoffs

Public Sectional Semifinals

Central Jersey Group 5

1-Toms River North 21, 5-Kingsway 14

Senior wide receiver/defensive back Cam Thomas caught the game-tying and go-ahead touchdowns and snagged two interceptions in the fourth quarter as the two-time defending Group 5 champion Mariners (11-0) survived an upset bid from the Dragons (8-3) to reach their fourth straight sectional final.

Kingsway struck first on a 24-yard touchdown pass from David Oravets to Tommy DePietro, but Toms River North responded immediately when senior Nasir Jackson returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

A blocked punt by Kingsway led to a 5-yard touchdown pass from Oravets to Christian White to put the Dragons up 14-7 in the second quarter. Toms River North responded again on a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback T.J. Valerio to Thomas, tying the game 14-14 with 3:48 left in the first half.

Toms River North opened the second half with a 56-yard scoring drive that ended with Thomas catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from Valerio for a 21-14 Mariners lead. A missed field goal gave Kingsway the ball back late in the game but Thomas snared his second interception to seal the win.

Toms River North will host No. 2 seed Rancocas Valley (9-2) in the sectional final.

Central Jersey Group 4

2-Brick Memorial 41, 6-Jackson Memorial 21

Junior quarterback Jason Lajara had a hand in all six Brick Memorial touchdowns by completing 8 of 13 passes for 212 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushing for 96 yards and 3 touchdowns on 14 carries as the Mustangs (9-2) rolled over the Jaguars (5-5) to advance to their first sectional final since 2015.

Junior wide receiver Nyzier Matthews caught three passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and had an interception on defense. His nine receiving touchdowns this season is a new program single-season record, passing the eight touchdowns previously held by Garrett Graham and Mike Lepore. Junior tight end Trey Tallmadge added a touchdown reception.

Jackson Memorial junior running back Jonah Glenn ran for 134 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, senior wide receiver Eric Zebrowski ran for 79 yards and a touchdown, and senior quarterback Dennis Caswell threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jordan Jones for Jackson.

South Jersey Group 3

2-Mainland 48, 3-Holmdel 13

Senior running back Rocco DeBiaso ran for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries and junior quarterback John Franchini threw for 138 yards and three scores as the Mustangs (8-3) started fast and put away the Hornets (8-2) to reach their third straight sectional final.

Mainland has won consecutive sectional titles and was last season’s Group 4 state champion.

DeBiaso had touchdown runs of 65 and 45 in the first half when Mainland built a 34-0 halftime lead. He added a 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Junior wide receiver Jake Blum caught three passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns to go over 1,000 yards receiving for the season. Lucas DeBiaso opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown run and junior wide receiver Andrew Gilman added a 51-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.

Holmdel junior quarterback Jack Cannon threw for 147 yards and a 10-yard touchdown to Michael Todisco, and senior running back Matt Iulo ran for a 9-yard touchdown for Holmdel. Mainland will host fourth-seeded Seneca (8-3) in the sectional championship game. The Golden Eagles upset undefeated Hopewell Valley, 28-25, in the other semifinal game.

Holmdel finishes the season with an 8-2 record and at least a share of the Class C North division title pending the result of the Thanksgiving game between Manasquan and Wall. If Manasquan defeats Wall the Hornets will win the outright title. After a 9-1 season in 2023, Holmdel’s 17 wins over the last two years are the most of any consecutive seasons in program history.
