Group 5
Toms River North 27, Washington Township 10
Senior quarterback T.J. Valerio completed 11 of 15 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns and sophomore Cole Garrison had a touchdown run and a touchdown catch as the Mariners (13-0) defeated the Minutemen (10-3) to reach their third straight Group 5 championship game.
Garrison had a 3-yard touchdown run that gave Toms River North a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Washington Township responded to tie the game but the Mariners answered on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Valerio to senior Mekai Morse and a 50-yard touchdown pass to senior Nasir Jackson. Washington Township’s Luke Sheets kicked a 33-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half to make it 21-0.
Valerio threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Garrison on fourth-and-goal with under three minutes left and senior Mordecai Ford clinched the game with an interception with two minutes to play.
Morse finished with four catches for 110 yards and a score and Valerio added 53 yards rushing on 11 carries.
Toms River North will play Union City in the Group 5 state final on a date and time to be determined. The Soaring Eagles won 42-0 over East Orange in the other semifinal.
Group 2
Rumson Fair-Haven 44, Point Boro 10
Senior quarterback Owen O’Toole completed 28 of 37 passes for a career-high 334 yards and ran for two touchdowns and senior Carson Memmot accounted for 19 points with three field goals, an interception return for a touchdown and four extra points as the Bulldogs (12-0) dominated the Panthers (10-3) to reach their third straight Group 2 state final.
Rumson also set a program single-season record with its 12th win.
Senior wide receiver Jordan Angstreich caught 10 passes for 130 yards to continue his record-breaking season and senior wideout Nick Thomas caught 10 passes for 123 yards. Junior running back Kellen Murray ran for 48 yards and two touchdowns and Memmot returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown in addition to kicking field goals of 22, 23 and 30 yards.
Point Boro’s points came on a 22-yard field goal by sophomore Jack Sullivan and a 51-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Jake Clayton to junior running back Calvin Videon-Perino. The touchdown connection pulled Point Boro to within 13-10 with 8:40 left in the third quarter but Rumson pulled away from there. The Bulldogs became the first team this season to hold Point Boro without a rushing touchdown.
Rumson will play Shabazz in the Group 2 state final after the Bulldogs defeated Hanover Park 8-7 in the other semifinals. The state championship game is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 4 at Rutgers since Shabazz plays on Thanksgiving, but that is not official until the NJSIAA announces the championship schedule.

6-Pope John 48, 10-St. John Vianney 14
Senior running back Tylik Hill ran for 234 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries and junior quarterback Luke Irwin threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions (5-7) pulled away from the Lancers (9-4) late in the first half to surge into the Non-Public B state final.
Hill, who is from Asbury Park, had touchdown runs of 54 and 36 yards to give Pope John a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. He added a 55-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to put the Lions ahead 48-14. Irwin tossed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Rozynski and a 64-yard scoring strike to Wes Johnston. Senior linebacker Tyler Houser had a 40-yard interception return late in the first half to give Pope John a 34-14 halftime lead. Sophomore running back Luke Gialanella added 53 yards rushing and a touchdown.
St. John Vianney sophomore running back Abdul Turay ran for 211 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries and junior quarterback Zach LaBarca ran for a 5-yard touchdown. Turay finished the year with a conference-leading and school single-season record 2,503 yards rushing and 37 touchdowns.
Pope John will face the winner of Saturday’s game between top-seeded DePaul and fourth-seeded Holy Spirit. DePaul was up 35-7 late in the fourth quarter as of 2:45 p.m.
