St. John Vianney Captures 12th Shore Conference Softball Championship

St. John Vianney captured the Shore Conference Tournament title with a 5-1 win against Donovan Catholic.

Senior pitcher Madison McDougall smoked a two-run home run and struck out 11 batters, to lead the Lancers (25-0) past the Griffins (25-2). McDougall batted 3-for-3 with the two-RBI home run and an RBI single, in addition to allowing only four hits and two walks in the win.

Senior Madison Kelliher laid down on a bunt and scored on the next at bat when senior SS Caroline Kopp hit an RBI triple to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, McDougall was hit by a pitch, senior SS Gabby Gonzalez doubled, and sophomore C Olivia Lombardi walked to load the bases. Freshman DP Olivia Haslacher fought off numerous pitches with foul balls to stay alive and ultimately hit a two-RBI single down the first base line to give the Lancers their first lead.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, junior 3B Brynn Utter doubled, and McDougall hit an RBI single on a hard ground ball for the 3-1 lead.

The Lancers would get two more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Freshman RF Peyton McDougall reached first on a slap single, setting the table for her older sister’s two-run home run.
