Shore Conference Tournament
Semifinals | Preview
(5) Rumson-Fair Haven 17, (17) Freehold Township 1 (5 Innings)
Sophomore right-hander Brady Williams retired 12 straight batters after allowing the first run of the game and the Bulldogs slugged four home runs as part of a 15-hit attack that overpowered the Patriots and sent Rumson to its first Shore Conference Tournament final since 2008.
The first four Freehold Township batters of the game reached against Williams, with George Burdge cracking a leadoff double and scored on a wild pitch. A hit batter loaded the bases with none out and Williams bounced back by striking out the next three to escape the inning having allowed just one run. Williams went on to set down the side in order in each of the next three innings and worked around three singles in the top of the fifth to close out his fifth win of the season with a scoreless frame.
D.J. Ylagan immediately answered for Rumson in the bottom of the first with a solo home run over the leftfield fence on the second Bulldogs’ batter of the game. Rumson scratched three runs across in the bottom of the second on a go-ahead RBI single by catcher Luke Gallagher, a fielder’s choice RBI ground out by Ylagan and a two-out error.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the third with two more home runs, the first by centerfielder Jack Gymesi to drive in two and extend the lead to 7-1 after Lloyd Bush had already singled home a run in the inning. Two batters after Gyimesi’s two-run laser that hit Freehold Township’s school bus just beyond the left-centerfield fence, sophomore shortstop Miles Martin launched a solo shot over the leftfield fence to make it 8-1.
Williams roped a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 11-1 in the fourth and both Gyimesi and Ylagan reached the three-RBI mark with a run-scoring single apiece, pushing the lead to 13-1. Casper Billington provided the grand finale with an opposite-field grand slam that pulled him into a tie with Brick Memorial senior Dan Golembiewski for the Shore Conference lead with nine home runs on the season.
