Look Back: Week 3 SSI Player of the Week Winner

Ryan Fernandez, Ocean

Fernandez is part of an Ocean defense that has posted shutouts in six of its seven wins so far this season, but last week, it was his goal-scoring stood out. The senior center back scored a goal in a 2-0 win over Matawan, then notched two in a 3-0 win over Red Bank. Fernandez locked up the Week 3 award with 29.3 percent of the votes cast, which was enough to be runner-up Brandon DeAngelis of Manasquan (23.9 percent).

Each week, Shore Sports Insider will give the fans of the Shore Conference a chance to pick the Player of the Week sponsored by Broad Street Dough Co.

Below, we have selected a player of the week from each of the seven Shore Conference divisions, plus three wild cards — all of whom are candidates in this week’s contest. Read about the nominees and vote at the bottom of the post for the one that deserves to be the overall Boys Soccer Player of the Week. Week 4 Players of the Week

Check out the seven Shore Conference divisional players of the week, plus three wild cards, and pick the top performer as the SSI Player of the Week for Week 3 (Sept. 23 through 29). Vote in the poll at the end of the this post once per hour through the deadline at 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

 

Class A North Player of the Week

Dom Poli, Holmdel

Poli scored two goals last week and the second of the two was Holmdel’s biggest of the season. The junior chased down a pass from classmate Luke Farrugia on the right side of the box and punched it in for the golden goal in the Hornets’ 3-2, overtime win over Manasquan.

Class A Central Player of the Week

Ethan Lustig, Manalapan

Lustig put up big numbers during the week, capped by a hat trick plus one assist in Manalapan’s messy 5-3 win at Lakewood on a rain-soaked grass field. For the week, Lustig produced five goals and four assists during Manalapan’s 2-0-1 week, which included a 3-3 draw at No. 1 Colts Neck.

Class A South Player of the Week

Christian Assante, Toms River North

Assante was heavily involved in Toms River North’s scoring last week. He scored the lone goal in a 1-1 tie vs. rival Toms River South and over the weekend, Assante scored two goals and assisted another in the Mariners’ 4-1 win over Allentown.

Class B North Player of the Week

Mason Boles, St. John Vianney

The Lancers had a huge week and in St. John Vianney’s two most important wins, Boles came up big. The junior scored both goals in the Lancers’ 2-0 win over Ocean to take over first place in the Class B North division, then posted a hat trick in a 3-2 win over Manchester in Shore Conference Tournament group play.

Class B Central Player of the Week

Trey Cummings, Red Bank

It was a unique week for Cummings, who showed off his finishing and facilitating ability. The senior scored a hat trick – including the golden goal – in a 3-2 Red Bank win over Brick in SCT group play, the dished out three assists in a 5-2 Bucs win over Henry Hudson in divisional play.

Class B South Player of the Week

Aidan Fitzgerald, Lacey

The Lions earned a crucial home win over Point Boro in SCT group play and Fitzgerald delivered two goals in the 3-1 Lions win.

Class C South Player of the Week

Giano Godenzi, Brick

Godenzi scored four goals last week, including a hat trick in Brick’s 4-1 win over Donovan Catholic. The junior also scored a goal in a 3-2, overtime loss to Red Bank.

Wild Cards

Harin Gutierrez-Moreno, Neptune

Neptune won three games last week and Gutierrez-Moreno helped produce in each of the games. He initiated the own goal that won Neptune its 1-0 decision over Pinelands in SCT group, scored a goal in a 2-0 win over Matawan, then scored twice in an 11-0 rout of New Egypt.

Robert Keegan, Wall

Keegan scored both goals in a 2-0 Wall win over a quality Central team to start the week and later posted a goal and an assist in Wall’s 7-0 win over Pinelands Saturday during SCT group play.

Dev Nayar, Ranney

Nayar went on a tear last week for a hot Ranney team, scoring two goals in each of the Panthers’ wins last week over Donovan Catholic, Asbury Park and East Brunswick Magnet.
