New Egypt 27, Keansburg 7 – Game Story
Junior wide receiver/running back Lucas Burgos ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, junior running back Eddie Novatkowski ran for 70 yards and a touchdown and the Warriors forced four turnovers on defense and special teams to defeat the Titans and earn the program’s first win as a member of the Shore Conference.
Head coach Steve Fence also became the program’s all-time wins leader with 36, passing former head coach and current Superintendent of Brick Township Schools Tom Farrell.
Senior Tommy Merlucci gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead with a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter. The lead grew to 10-0 when Novatkowski scored on a 5-yard run to cap a mammoth 16-play, 97-yard drive in the second quarter. A safety by senior linebacker Stephen Meleg in the third quarter pushed the Warriors’ advantage to 10-0 before a 29-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Caleb Kowaleski to junior wideout Clyde Ferris on fourth and 20, plus a 2-point conversion run by Kowaleski, made it 20-0.
Keansburg got on the board when a 29-yard pass from senior quarterback James Valle to senior tight end Ja’Zier Wynn led to a 2-yard touchdown run by junior running back Milan Mraz. Keansburg got the ball back shortly thereafter and drove to the New Egypt 13-yard line, but an interception in the end zone by Novatkowski ended the threat. Burgos then put the finishing touches on a special night in New Egypt history by ripping off a 53-yard touchdown run with 2:22 remaining.

Neptune 42, Keyport 14
Senior Cameron Stukes ran for a pair of scores and junior Jeremiah Montgomery added another as both went over 100 yards to help the Scarlet Fliers (1-1, 1-0) pick up their first win by beating the Red Raiders (0-2, 0-1).
Sophomore quarterback Caleb Brown-Mason threw for 192 yards and ran for a touchdown for Neptune.
Nondivisional
No. 1 Toms River North 55, Toms River East 0
Senior running back Mordecai Ford ran for three touchdowns and senior quarterback T.J. Valerio ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass to senior Blaise Boland as the top-ranked Mariners (2-0) steamrolled the Raiders (1-1).
Ford had touchdown runs of 5, 10 and 8 yards while Valerio had a 5-yard touchdown run and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Boland when North opened a 35-0 lead. Sophomore running back Lucas Elias added touchdown runs of 30 and 10 yards before sophomore defensive back Chris Degiglio capped the scoring with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown.
No. 3 Rumson-Fair Haven 41, No. 5 Point Boro 28
Senior quarterback Owen O’Toole completed 7 of 12 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and junior running back Kellen Murray ran for 140 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries as the Bulldogs opened their season by winning a barnburner over the Panthers (1-1).
O’Toole threw touchdowns of 62 and 31 yards to senior wide receiver Nick Thomas and tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Nic Economou. Murray scored on runs of 3 and 1 yards before polishing off the win with a 56-yard touchdown run late in the game. Thomas finished with two catches for 93 yards and two scores and senior receiver Jordan Angstreich caught caught three passes for 43 yards.
Rumson took advantage of five Point Boro fumbles by recovering three of them. Fumble recoveries by senior linebackers Jacob Tobias and Austin Kiernan led directly to touchdowns when the Bulldogs built a 28-7 halftime lead.
Point Boro swung back in the second half with sophomore quarterback Jake Clayton leading the way. Clayton finished with 142 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 13 carries, 134 of which came in the second half. He scored on runs of 27 and 47 yards to pull Point Boro with two touchdowns, then unleashed a brilliant 55-yard touchdown run in which he broke multiple tackles. That score cut Rumson’s lead to 34-28 but Point Boro was unable to recover the onside kick.

Senior fullback Dylan Reitmeyer ran for a touchdown in the first half and junior fullback Calvin Videon-Perino ran for 58 yards.
No. 6 Brick Memorial 37, Brick 6
Junior quarterback Jason Lajara ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns, senior running back Kevin Andrews had a pair of touchdowns and junior Trey Tallmadge added a 75-yard scoring run to send the Mustangs (2-0) past the rival Green Dragons (0-1).
Sean Savannah caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from James Hirtes in the loss for Brick.
No. 7 Holmdel 42, Ocean 10
Junior quarterback Jack Cannon threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more as the Hornets (2-0) opened up a 35-3 halftime lead and put away the Spartans to continue their offensive onslaught to start the season.
Cannon gave Holmdel a 7-0 lead with a touchdown pass to Frankie Serini and then tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Matt Iulo to make it 14-3 after the first quarter. Cannon ran for a 29-yard touchdown to extend the Hornets’ lead to 21-3 before Serini made a fantastic defensive play to strip the Ocean ballcarrier and return the fumble 60 yards for a touchdown, giving Holmdel a 28-3 lead. Cannon closed the first half with a 36-yard touchdown run where he weaved his way through the Ocean defense to put the Hornets up 35-3 at the break.
Holmdel closed out its scoring when Serini got behind the defense and Cannon found him for a 40-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
No. 8 Jackson Memorial 37, Long Branch 34
Senior kicker Joe Muzzillo converted a 19-yard field goal as time expired to send the Jaguars (2-0) to a thrilling victory over the Green Wave.
Long Branch rallied to tie the score at 34 with one minute left in regulation but Jackson senior Ishmal Thompson blocked the extra point to prevent the Green Wave from taking the lead. Junior running backs Jonah Glenn and Jio Kabiri combined to advance the ball to the 1-yard line where Muzzillo was able to kick the Jaguars to their second victory of the season.
Glenn ran for close to 200 yards, Kabiri had a touchdown run and senior receiver Eric Zebrowski caught a touchdown pass and also ran for a touchdown.
Howell 42, No. 9 Freehold Township 33
Senior quarterback Vince Meehan ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns and tossed touchdown passes to senior wideout Jason Borgia and sophomore wide receiver Jackson Behn as the Rebels (1-0) opened their season by knocking off the No. 9 Patriots (1-1) in a district rivalry game.
Senior running back Juan DeJesus ran for 53 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and senior running back Quincy Shaw also ran for touchdowns for Howell. Meehan threw for 90 yards with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Borgia and a 32-yard touchdown pass to Behn.
Shaw recorded a team-high 10 tackles, senior David Strouse had a sack, and Josh Krutyansky and Ryan Cross had a fumble recovery each.
Freehold Township senior quarterback Nick Cardone completed 18 of 28 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 32 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Justin Tamai ran for 39 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for a game-high 101 yards. Senior wide receiver Luke Meehan caught four passes for 56 yards and two touchdowns, senior wideout Noah Cancela caught a touchdown and sophomore wide receiver Jake Schultzel caught five passes for 93 yards.
No. 10 St. John Vianney 35, No. 12 Marlboro 7
Sophomore running back Abdul Turay ran for 109 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries and junior quarterback Zach LaBarca completed 12 of 18 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown as the Lancers (2-0) stormed past the Mustangs (1-1) in a top-10 matchup.
Dante Campagna caught five passes for 100 yards and Adam Urs had a 25-yard touchdown catch when St. John Vianney opened a 35-0 halftime lead.
Junior quarterback Zach Caporale ran for a touchdown in the loss for Marlboro.
Middletown South 28, Manalapan 21 (OT)
Luca Donofrio threw a game-tying 17-yard touchdown pass to Mike Murphy in the third quarter and connected with Logan Burbank for the go-ahead touchdown in the overtime period as the Eagles (1-1) rallied for a heart-pounding victory over the Braves (0-2) to give head coach Marc Tomo his first career win.
Sophomore Nick Palmieri gave Manalapan a 7-0 by returning the opening kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown. Middletown South knotted the score on a 55-yard touchdown run by Justin Rosato before Manalapan retook the lead on an 84-yard touchdown run by junior running back A’shere Woolfolk. The Eagles tied it at 14 on a 35-yard touchdown run by Burbank.
Manalapan went ahead 21-14 in the second quarter when senior quarterback Ryan Dougherty threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Anthony Hammel.
Donofrio completed 9 of 11 passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 80 yards on 12 carries. Rosato finished with 87 yards and a touchdown on six carries, senior Brendan Sliva ran for 50 yards on 12 carries and Burbank had 49 yards and a touchdown on three carries.
Central 41, Matawan 28
Senior quarterback Joe Vessozi threw four touchdown passes, including two to sophomore wide receiver C.J. Yates, as the Golden Eagles (2-0) beat the Huskies (0-2) to start 2-0 for the first time since 2021.
Nnaemecca Amenchina started the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run before Yates hauled in touchdown passes of 60 and 18 yards. Tino Nastasi caught a 25-yard touchdown pass, Royalty Riley had an 8-yard touchdown reception and Austin Jarvis ran for a 1-yard touchdown. Senior running back Nick Ruggiero ran for over 100 yards.
Riley had an interception on defense while Amenchina forced a fumble that was recovered by Aidan Graham.
Red Bank 33, Jackson Liberty 0
Junior quarterback Jag Gardner threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout JahMir Lane-Bailey and ran for a 5-yard score to help lead the Bucs (1-1) to a shutout victory over the Lions.
Senior running back Kashta Ally ran for a 12-yard touchdown, senior quarterback Quinn Niesz ran for a 25-yard touchdown and junior running back Matt Huss ran for a 9-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion.
Lakewood 52, Asbury Park 40
Senior quarterback Rahmel Anderson erupted for 353 yards rushing and six touchdowns to power the Piners (2-0) to a wild victory over the Blue Bishops (0-1).
Both the yardage and touchdowns are school single-game records, according to Lakewood head coach L.J. Clark.
Barnegat 47, Freehold 23
Senior running back Johnnel Johnson exploded for six touchdowns to send the Bengals (1-1) to their first win of the season by topping the Colonials (1-1).
Jayshawn Wiggs threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Damier Lester, in the loss for Freehold.
Toms River South 28, Raritan 7
Senior running back Jake Henehan exploded for a career-high 284 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries to power the Indians (1-1) past the Rockets (0-1) for their first win of the season.
Senior quarterback Gio Morales-Torres added a 31-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout J.J. Geremia.
Middletown North 37, Lacey 7
Junior quarterback Owen Robson ran for a touchdown and threw touchdown passes to senior tight end Joe Grasso and senior wide receiver Brian O’Donnell to lead the Lions to a dominant season-opening victory.
Junior running back Shane Volante and sophomore running back Matt Belenko added rushing touchdowns and junior Jack Viola connected on a field goal.
Middletown North led 30-0 at halftime.
Southern 26, Manchester 0
Sophomore quarterback Carson Abbato threw for one score to Justin Silva and ran for another, and Silva added a punt return touchdown as the Rams (2-0) blanked the Hawks (1-1). Senior Keegan Foote added a field goal in the win.
Manchester senior quarterback Aidan Lunn did not play after an ankle injury in the Hawks’ season-opening win over West Deptford.
Shore 28, Pinelands 7
Senior quarterback Josh Moeller completed 1o of 14 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown and senior running back Brendan O’Brien ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the Blue Devils past the Wildcats and give Don Klein his first win as Blue Devils’ head coach.
O’Brien, who also plays linebacker, made 10 tackles with one tackle for loss on defense. Senior linebacker Tommy Schroeder recorded a game-high 16 tackles and recovered a fumble.
Senior quarterback Ty Kline threw a touchdown pass to senior Matt Davis to account for Pinelands’ points. Senior running back Jaimin Parkinson ran for 142 yards on 25 carries and junior linebacker Eric Kobilnyk made a team-high 10 tackles.

Don Bosco Prep 44, No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 0
Junior tailback Dante DeLuca ran for a pair of touchdowns, junior Colin Brennan had 131 yards and a touchdown and senior quarterback Deven Sisler threw a touchdown and ran for another as the Ironmen (1-1) dropped the Caseys to 0-2 for the first time since 2009.
Don Bosco’s defense held RBC to 53 total yards as junior linebacker Gino Greco had a sack for a safety and an interception.

No. 11 Wall 41, Colts Neck 0
Sophomore quarterback Franny Scaramellino ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns and tossed a 48-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Derrick Boss as the Crimson Knights (2-0) overpowered the Cougars (0-2).
Scaramellino had touchdown runs of 35 and 34 yards and finished with 92 yards passing. Senior running back Mason Adam ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and junior kicker Heath Reinhardt connected on field goals of 29 and 37 yards.
Manasquan 48, Monmouth 14
Junior running back Ace Etienne ran for 230 yards on 14 carries and scored a program single-game record six touchdowns — all in the first half — to lead the Warriors (2-0) to a dominant victory over the Falcons (0-2).
Ettiene scored on runs of 2, 40 and 60 yards in the first quarter and added touchdown scampers of 8, 7 and 40 yards in the second quarter as Manasquan built a 41-0 advantage. In two games, Etienne has rushed for 348 yards and seven touchdowns on an average of 11.2 yards per carry.
Dylan Lu added 111 yards rushing and a touchdown on just eight carries.
Monmouth freshman quarterback Ryan Corwin completed 10 of 18 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown, firing a 78-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Frank Colvin. He also ran for a touchdown. Colvin finished with three catches for 131 yards and a score.
