Neptune 32, Asbury Park 6
The Scarlet Fliers (4-1, 2-0) ended a five-game losing streak against the Blue Bishops (2-2, 0-2) behind a dominant running attack that rolled up 331 yards on the ground to return the Friendship Trophy to Neptune.
Junior Kingston Pinnock had a career-high 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 15 carries, and junior quarterback Caleb Brown-Mason had 129 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries, plus a 35-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Daaron Lynch. Junior Hassin McMillan added a 3-yard touchdown run in the win.
Senior running back Amiere Massie had a 3-yard touchdown run in the loss for Asbury Park.
The Scarlet Fliers now lead the all-time series with Asbury Park 51-42-4.
Class D South
New Egypt 36, Keansburg 33
Senior wide receiver Toby Chao had a pair of touchdown catches from Thomas Marabuto, who also had a rushing touchdown to help the Warriors (1-3, 1-1) pick up their first win of the season by downing the host Titans (1-3, 0-2).
Senior Eddie Novakowski added a touchdown run and three two-point conversions in the win.
Sophomore running back Taurian Black had a pair of rushing touchdowns, senior running back Milan Mraz had three rushing touchdowns and senior Ason Young threw a touchdown pass in the loss for Keansburg.
Pt. Beach 41, Keyport 13
The Garnet Gulls (4-1, 3-0) clinched at least a tie for their first division title since 2019 with a win over the Red Raiders (1-4, 1-2) behind three touchdown passes from senior quarterback Matthew Rossi.
Senior Eli Ives had a 92-yard touchdown run as well as a touchdown catch, sophomore Thomas Aiosa had a touchdown run, Blaise Sholander had over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown catch, and freshman Jalen Kreiger also caught a touchdown.
Thomas Hennessy scored the Garnet Gulls’ other touchdown on a scoop and score off a blocked punt.
Senior running back Mekai Henderson had a three-yard touchdown run and a 65-yard touchdown catch in the loss for Keyport.
Friday, Sept. 26
Class A North
No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 29, No. 2 Holmdel 28
A matchup billed as the potential Shore Conference game of the year lived up to it, and then some, as the Caseys (5-0, 3-0) barely held on to defeat the Hornets (3-1, 2-1).
RBC freshman quarterback Rahmir Rivera opened the scoring with his legs on a one-yard keeper, but Holmdel took the lead in the second quarter with a sack by senior defensive end Luke Schiess for a safety and a passing touchdown by senior quarterback Jack Cannon to senior wideout Carmine Aliperti. The two teams traded scores in the final minutes of the first half, with Rivera firing down the field for a 27-yard score to sophomore wide receiver Jason Bereczsky, and Cannon scoring a 52-yard touchdown with his legs. The Caseys got into field goal range to end the half, but a 50-yard attempt was blocked.
Red Bank Catholic took the lead back early in the third quarter, as Rivera accounted for his third score of the night from 14 yards out to senior wide receiver Daniel Zabora, but the Hornets led an 11-play, 80-yard drive to tie the game with Cannon’s second rushing touchdown. The Caseys took a 29-22 lead in the fourth quarter with a 48-yard run from freshman running back Gabe Kemp to set up a photo finish. Cannon notched his third rushing touchdown of the night with 2:39 left, but the extra point was missed, and Red Bank Catholic ran out the clock after recovering an onside kick to stay undefeated.
Kemp finished with 185 yards and a score on 23 carries for the Caseys on the ground, while Zabora caught six passes for 109 yards and a touchdown of his own.
Middletown South 20, Marlboro 14 (OT)
The Eagles (1-4, 1-2) got on the board in the win column in overtime, defeating the Mustangs (2-3, 0-3).
Junior running back Justin Rosato was all over the field in regulation, scoring both touchdowns on the ground for Middletown South, and intercepting a pass as well. Junior Owen Maguire hauled in a game-winning 25-yard touchdown pass to end it in overtime.
No. 3 Rumson-Fair Haven 48, No. 7 Middletown North 21
The Bulldogs’ (4-1, 2-1) offense kept humming along in another strong scoring performance against the Lions (2-2, 1-2).
RFH’s ground game propelled the Bulldogs to victory, led by an eye-popping 335 yards and two touchdowns from junior running back Ryder Izzo.
Through the air, junior quarterback Casey Moore threw two touchdowns to senior wideout Chris Economou, and also added a rushing touchdowns with his legs. Sophomore signal-caller Brady WIlliams added another touchdown through the air, finding senior wide receiver Brandon McDonald.
Junior linebacker Carmine Florio also added a pick-six on the defensive side.
Class A South
No. 10 Donovan Catholic 15, No. 4 Brick Memorial 14
The Griffins (2-3, 2-1) bookended the game strong to bounce back and defeat the Mustangs (3-2, 2-1).
Junior running back Alex Staten got the party started by returning the opening kickoff 94 yards to open the scoring. Donovan Catholic remained ahead 7-0 until midway through the second quarter, when Brick Memorial senior quarterback Jason Lajara found senior running back Nazeer Whittaker for a 13-yard touchdown to tie the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Mustangs forced a fumble, and forced the Griffins to see double, with Lajara connecting with Whittaker for the second time in as many minutes, this time from 24 yards out to take the lead. That’s where the scoring stayed until the game’s final minutes.
Donovan Catholic drove down the field late, and junior running back Ethan Nicolas scored from two yards out with 34 seconds to play. The Griffins decided to go for the win, and the risk paid off with a successful two-point conversion. The Mustangs got into field-goal range in the final seconds, but missed a game-winning try as time expired.
Point Boro 28, No. 8 Jackson 7
The Panthers (2-3, 1-1) notched their second straight win, taking down the Jaguars (2-3, 1-1).
Point Boro sophomore quarterback Jax Corino stepped up after an opening-drive injury to junior starter Jake Clayton. He led three more scoring drives in a key victory, including a 75-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Calvin Videon-Perino. Videon-Perino added two more scores on the ground, and junior running back TJ Albanese scored a rushing touchdown of his own.
Class B North
No. 6 Manalapan 38, St. John Vianney 35
The Braves (4-1, 2-0) led by as many as 24, but a frantic comeback attempt from the Lancers (2-3, 1-1) in the final minutes threatened, before falling just short.
Manalapan led 21-7 at halftime thanks to an opening pick-six by senior defensive back D.J. Corsaro and two rushing touchdowns from senior running back Ah’sere Woolfolk. He added another touchdown in the third quarter, and later in the frame senior wideout Nick Friscia capitalized on another interception with a rushing touchdown to make it 35-7. With seven minutes to play, the Braves led 38-14, when St. John Vianney finally got going.
Senior quarterback Zach LaBarca continued his strong season, converting on four touchdown passes – including three in the fourth quarter – and one rushing. He found junior wideout Brayden Delavega, senior receivers DJ Carter and Adam Urs, and senior tight end Thomas Foley for scores. Woolfolk broke free for a 31-yard run in the final seconds to seal a barn-burning, high-scoring victory.
Howell 24, Freehold Township 20
The Rebels (2-3, 1-2) got on the board in divisional play with a hard-fought win over the Patriots (2-3, 0-3).
Junior quarterback Connor Acker found a big play early on with a 63-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Jack Quinn. Acker later threw for another score in the fourth quarter, finding junior running back Connor Halverson from four yards out, for what was ultimately the game-winning touchdown. Senior defensive back Chris LaForge recorded a go-ahead 65-yard pick-six earlier on in the game, and the defense forced a Freehold Township punt in the final minutes. The Rebels ran out the clock, thanks to strong running from sophomore running back Tim O’Rourke.
Class B South
Toms River South 33, Manchester 22
The Indians (1-3, 1-1) got in the win column thanks to a strong dual-threat day from its quarterback to take down the Hawks (0-5, 0-3).
Senior quarterback Brett Rankin led the way with his arms and legs, throwing for 192 yards and three scores, while also running for 108 yards and another two touchdowns on the ground. Rankin found junior wide receiver Greyson Thumm for long-yardage scores of 56 and 68 yards, and sophomore wideout George Campbell added an 18-yard touchdown reception of his own. Sophomore defensive back Hamza Hollingshead added an interception on the defensive end.
Central 21, Brick 0
The Golden Eagles (4-1, 2-1) continued their strong start with a shutout victory over the Dragons (3-2, 1-2).
Senior quarterback Jake Halpin started the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run after a 20-yard pass to junior wideout CJ Yates, and later scored again on a short field late in the first half to take a two-score lead into the locker room. Senior Elijah Reeder added a seven-yard score late in the game to get Central into the end zone for the third and final time.
Class C North
Matawan 28, Colts Neck 14
The Huskies (3-2, 2-1) bounced back after last week’s loss and controlled the tempo to take down the Cougars (1-4, 1-2).
Sophomore quarterback BlairCarter Gagneron led a strong aerial attack with three passing touchdowns to three different receivers. He found wideouts senior Welman Crooms (six yards), senior Damian Marsh (60 yards), and sophomore Cayson Williams (28 yards). Sophomore running back Sean Euell added a score from 18 yards out on Matawan’s first drive of the game. Colts Neck fought back to within a score but never tied or took the lead.
No. 12 Manasquan 35, Long Branch 0
The Warriors (4-1, 2-1) did all their damage in the first half, taking a five-score lead and never looking back to defeat the Green Wave (0-5, 0-3).
Senior running back Ace Etienne scored twice on the ground, while junior quarterback Kyle Dow added a touchdown with his legs. He also found senior wide receiver Frankie Tackett for a touchdown through the air. Tackett added a rushing touchdown of his own.
Red Bank 14, Shore 13
The Buccaneers (3-1, 3-0) continued their strong Class C North start in a nail-biting, last-second victory over the Blue Devils (2-2, 1-2).
Junior quarterback Brett Laude threw for both touchdowns on the run, finding seniors Jahmir Lane-Bailey (five yards) and Ahmare Bonus (12 yards) in the end zone. On the ground, senior running back Matt Huss ran for over 100 yards for the third straight game.
Red Bank’s defensive line wreaked havoc on defense and special teams, as well. Lane-Bailey, senior Bennett Lopez, and senior Charlie Langa each recorded two sacks, and Jag Gardner blocked a potential game-tying extra point after Shore found the end zone late to seal the victory for the Bucs.
Class C South
Pinelands 14, Lacey 10
The Wildcats (3-2, 1-1) defeated the Lions (2-3, 1-1) for the first time in dramatic fashion.
Lacey struck first in the second quarter with a field goal, but Pinelands took the lead with a touchdown before the end of the first half, as junior JJ Jenkins found Anthony Bonds for a score through the air. Lions’ junior running back Joe Davis broke free for a 35-yard rushing touchdown to take the lead back. The score remained 10-7 until the final two minutes, where Jenkins and Bonds connected once again. Jenkins lofted a pass to the back corner of the end zone, and Bonds ran under it to make a diving catch and convert the game-winning score.
In the run game, sophomore running back RJ Clark eclipsed the century mark for the third consecutive game.
Sophomore linebacker Eric Kobilnyk also returned on the defensive side, and made his presence known, with over 10 tackles in his first game back.
Barnegat 49, Lakewood 0
The Bengals (3-2, 1-2) rolled from the start, with offensive efficiency through the air and on the ground against Piners (2-3, 0-3).
Senior quarterback Jack Haviland ran for a score and threw for three more to receivers junior Blake Pezzuti and senior Brady Anderson, and another to junior tight end Nick Malinowski. Barnegat also added a trio of scores on the ground, two by sophomore running back Ryan Fitzpatrick and another by junior wide receiver Zy’Mere Jackson.
Class D North
Ocean 42, Freehold Boro 13
263 yards five touchdowns on the ground helped catapault the Spartans (3-2, 2-1) to their second straight divisional victory over the Colonials (1-4, 0-3).
Senior running back Josh Calixte paced Ocean with 97 yards and a score on 12 carries in the run game, with senior Hayden Ansell also adding a score to go along with 48 yards. Freshman Braylon Thompson ran for 87 yards and a team-high two touchdowns.
Junior quarterback Jordan Gaudious had an efficient night, completing five of his six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. He found senior tight end Nick Alessi for a five-yard score, while senior wideout Mickey McGovern led the team with two catches for 42 yards.
Nondivisional
No. 5 Southern 24, No. 11 Toms River North 13
The Rams (5-0) continued their strong start to the season, marching into Toms River and taking down the Mariners (1-4).
Southern took a 14-7 lead at halftime thanks to two touchdown passes from junior quarterback Carson Abbato, while Toms River North’s lone first-half score came from junior quarterback Logan Brill through the air. The Rams opened the second half with a trick play, as senior running back Ace Williams threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Darren Hamlin. They later added a field goal in the third quarter. Brill threw for another touchdown to junior tight end Jack Baker to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter, but that was where the scoring ended.
Monmouth 13, Toms River East 9
The Falcons (3-2, 2-1) won a low-scoring game to outlast the Raiders (3-2, 2-1).
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Corwin accounted for both scores, finding the end zone with his legs, and throwing a touchdown pass to senior wideout Jaylin Reeves. Monmouth’s defense stepped up as well, as senior linebacker Troy Lewis stopped what would have been a long TRE touchdown at the two-yard line, and the unit walled up for a goal-line stand to end the possession.
No. 9 Wall 21, Raritan 14
The Crimson Knights (3-2) improved to over .500, coming away victorious in a defensive battle against the Rockets (2-2).
Wall senior quarterback Brian McKenna threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Maddox Mizelle to open the scoring. Raritan tied it up in the second quarter with a 10-yard score from sophomore quarterback Zahir Jones to junior Eric Berg. The Crimson Knights put together a solid scoring drive late in the first half and senior running back Dylan Cohen punched in a two-yard score with under a minute to play in the second quarter.
Midway through the third, running back John Jeleniewski scored a two-yard touchdown of his own to tie it up, before Wall missed a 35-yard field goal to end the third quarter. In his season debut, junior defensive back Franny Scaramellino intercepted a pass to start the fourth quarter and took it 30 yards to the end zone, for what was ultimately the game-winning score. The Rockets had multiple chances to potentially respond, but were unable to make it to the end zone in the final seconds.
