Friday, Sept. 26

Class A North

No. 2 CBA 3, No. 1 Colts Neck 2

Sophomore Joe Guastella assisted first-half headers by senior James Brady and junior Justin Arias, then scored a second-half strike that proved to be the winning goal in a Colts (7-1-2, 4-0) win over the Cougars (6-1, 3-1) — a rematch of the 2024 Shore Conference Tournament championship game.

The win is the seventh in a row for CBA and the loss the first of the season for Colts Neck, which had won each of its first six matches.

Brady headed in a cross from Guastella from the right side of the 18-yard box to the middle of the box in the 28th minute and in the 36th, Guastella again found space on the right side, served the ball to the back post and Arias slammed another header into the goal for a 2-0 CBA lead.

In the third minute of the second half, Colts Neck attempted to clear the ball away from its goal and it landed at the feet of Guastella, who settled it and ripped a shot from 15 yards out that slipped inside the near right post for a 3-0 Colts advantage.

Colts Neck won last year’s SCT final by a 3-2 margin and made it the same score in reverse with two second half goals. Senior Dillon Younger headed in a cross from senior Ben Kazani in the 51st minute to cut CBA’s lead to 3-1 and in the 68th, senior Gabe Kruglyanski headed in a set piece from Kazani to make it a one-score game.

Junior Sean Moore — who entered Friday with at least one goal in each of Colts Neck’s first six games — slipped behind the defense for an uncontested shot in the final minute, but his one-timed volley missed the target wide of the left post.

Seniors Jake Nagy and Jeremy Li combined on the shutout, with Nagy making seven saves. Sophomore Jovanny Cervantes kept Monmouth in the game by stopping 10 Ranney shots.
