Shannon Hoadley, Former Mater Dei Prep Football Coach and Longtime Shore Conference Assistant, Has Died at 54
Former Mater Dei Prep head football coach Shannon Hoadley, who was also an assistant at three other Shore Conference programs, has died at 54, his family shared.
“It is with shock and unspeakable grief that we share the passing of an amazing husband, father, brother, and friend,” his family wrote on Facebook. “Leslie ‘Shannon’ Hoadley passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday. Arrangements will be announced shortly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers during this difficult time.”
Hoadley, who was a 1989 Mater Dei graduate, was hired as Mater Dei’s head coach in 2015 after serving as an assistant for the Seraphs since 2008. He coached the team for one season before they hired Dino Mangiero, who helped guide the Seraphs to their first state title in 2016 with Hoadley as the assistant head coach. Hoadley remained an assistant until the Middletown parochial school permanently closed its doors in 2022 due to financial difficulties.
The Union Beach native was previously an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Mike Ciccotelli at Keyport from 1997 to 2005, which included the Red Raiders winning a state sectional title and making a sectional final appearance in 2002-03.
Hoadley also worked as an assistant at St. John Vianney and most recently was an assistant coach at Raritan in 2024. The Rockets paid tribute to Hoadley in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“Coach Shannon was more than a coach, he was a mentor, a leader, and family to his players,” the team wrote on its official account. “He loved his guys like they were his own and poured his heart into every practice, every game, and every relationship.
“His impact on the Shore Conference football community and the brotherhood he helped build will never be forgotten. Coach Shannon’s legacy lives on through the players he shaped and the lives he touched. Forever remembered. Forever missed. Always a Rocket; Forever a Seraph.”
Hoadley is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their two daughters, Mackenzie, 15, and Isabelle, 22. Mackenzie is currently a sophomore at St. John Vianney. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up for his family.
