Group Semifinals

Group I

At Monroe High School

Thrive Charter 59, New Egypt 45

New Egypt (15-15) took the defending Group I champions to the fourth quarter in a tie game, but the Titans (22-5) turned up the heat and ended the Warriors’ deepest ever state tournament run by advancing to Sunday’s state final at Rutgers University.

Senior Nolan Arnold scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds, handed out seven assists, picked off three steals and blocked a shot by 6-foot-4 Thrive senior Marjon Skillman to lead New Egypt. Arnold scored 10 of his points during the third quarter, which opened with the Warriors scoring eight straight points to take a 35-33 lead.

The Warriors led, 43-40, with two seconds left in the third when Thrive senior Tyler Hammond buried a corner three-pointer out of a baseline out-of-bounds set. Hammond then nailed a three on Thrive’s first possession of the fourth and the Titans did not give up the lead the rest of the way. Arnold scored off a steal to make it 46-45 with 6:30 left and Thrive outscored New Egypt, 13-0, the rest of the way while forcing New Egypt into nine fourth-quarter turnovers and 21 for the game.

Skillman led Thrive with 14 points, 13 rebounds and three assists and Hammond finished with 13. Junior Jamar Young and senior Kim Ross combined for 17 points off the bench, with Young going for 9 points, six rebounds and three assists and Ross scoring eight points, including a pair of and-one finishes in the fourth-quarter.
