Class C North

St. John Vianney 4, Red Bank 3

Wyatt Lewis lofted a deep fly ball to left field with two out in the bottom of the seventh that dropped in front of the warning track, scoring Nick Vitiello with the game-winning run and giving the Lancers a victory over the Bucs that extends their winning streak to six.

Senior left-hander Dylan Blackman took a 3-0 into the sixth for St. John Vianney, giving him 12 straight scoreless innings to start the season after he pitched a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Freehold Township on March 30. After retiring the first two batters of the top of the sixth inning, Blackman surrendered three consecutive two-out singles to Chris Doody, Matt Huss and Casey Lillis, the last of which scored Doody to cut the Bucs deficit to 3-1 and prompt a pitching change.

Graham Reppert pulled a single through the right side off reliever Matt Baczor to score both Huss and Lillis after Lillis stole second base to move into scoring position. Baczor ended the rally there and pitched a clean top of the seventh to turn the game over to the Lancers lineup in the bottom of the inning.

After Red Bank reliever Jack Monahan hit C.J. Pizzirusso leading off the inning, Mike Capaldo hit a one-out single to put runners on first and second. Tyler Shpiro then shot a grounder past the pitcher’s mound, but Red Bank shortstop Joe Henry made a diving stop and flip to Lillis and second base for the force out.

With two out and runners on the corners, Lewis launched a deep fly ball that carried over the head of leftfielder Jason Huss and scored Vitiello to end the game.

St. John Vianney plated three runs in the bottom of the third to open the scoring, with Shpiro knocking in one of the runs on the RBI single.
