The Week 3 recipient of the 2026 Joe Leone’s Baseball Team of the Week is Point Beach after the Garnet Gulls went 3-0 last week with two wins over defending Shore Conference Tournament and Class A South division champion Brick Memorial.
Brick Memorial was coming off an eye-opening road win over DePaul Catholic on April 11 and jumped on Point Beach in its return to Shore Conference play the following Monday. The Garnet Gulls, meanwhile, were swept by Toms River East in their previous series, which included a 17-3 loss.
After Dan Golembiewski’s second home run of the game on April 13 extended the Mustangs’ lead to 10-5 in the top of the seventh inning, leaving the Garnet Gulls a five-run deficit to make up in the bottom of the inning.
What followed was a rally that may have swung the momentum of two seasons. Tommy Conroy ripped an RBI single to cut the deficit to 10-7 and a a hard ground ball to the right side by freshman Max Sesny plated two more. Junior Brody Powers tied the game with a one-out single into rightfield and with two out and a 1-1 count, sophomore Thomas Slobiski slammed a long single to the fence in right-centerfield the chased home the winning run, completing an improbable, 11-10 win for Point Beach over Brick Memorial.
Two days later, the Mustangs jumped on Point Beach again, this time establishing a 6-1 lead in the early innings. Unlike game one between the two teams, Point Beach did not wait until the seventh inning to put up a crooked number that gave the Garnet Gulls the lead. In the top of the third, Point Beach exploded for eight runs to take a 9-6 lead, including back-to-back two-run doubles by Antonio Acevedo and Slobiski and capped by a two-run home run by Conroy. Acevedo also came on in relief of Slobiski on the mound and worked 4 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Following a pair of high-scoring nail-biters, Point Beach capped its week with a dominant performance on the mound. Conroy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning vs. Brick and finished with a two-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over the reigning Class C South division champion. Conroy did not issue a walk, hit two batters and struck out nine. During the 3-0 week, Conroy went 8-for-11 at the plate with three doubles, a home run and six RBI while also going 2-0 with one earned run allowed in eight innings.
The 3-0 week lifted Point Beach back into the race for first place the Shore Conference Class A South division, which remains attainable even after Monday’s loss to Jackson. The Garnet Gulls are a game-and-a-half behind Wall for the top spot in the standings and will play the first-place Crimson Knights in the final series of the division schedule.
On Tuesday, Shore Sports Insider visited practice to present Point Beach’s Head Coach Angelo Fiore and the team with a $250 Joe Leone’s Italian Specialties Gift Card, courtesy of our partners at Joe Leone’s, for a well-earned team meal.
