Marty Kenney Championship Bracket

Quarterfinals

(6) Howell 11, (3) Wall 5

The Rebels capitalized on three errors and a wild pitch by scoring eight runs combined in the third and fourth innings and held on to knock off the Crimson Knights, with senior Jackson Vetrano picking up his fourth win on the mound.

Two errors led to the first three runs of the top of the third, then Antonio Magistrelli made it 4-0 with an RBI single. Will Hague got two runs back for Wall in the bottom of the third with a two-run double, but Howell answered with five straight singles to open the fourth, including a two-run knock by Waylon Cavanaugh. The Rebels made it a second straight four-run inning by pushing a run across on a bases-loaded error, followed by a wild pitch.

(2) Red Bank Catholic 1, (7) Manalapan 0 (10 Innings)

Senior catcher Aiden Funk led off the bottom of the 10th with a double down the leftfield line and classmate Jake Frankel drove him in with the game-winning RBI single to give the Caseys a walk-off win over the Braves in an MCT marathon.

Funk ripped a ground ball inside the third-base bag and all the way to the leftfield corner for a stand-up double to start the bottom of the 10th, then waved off a courtesy runner to run for himself. Frankel fell behind, 1-2, took a ball to work the count even, then scalded a line drive over the head of second baseman Vin Matteis and into rightfield, easily scoring Funk from second base.

Glen Popes pitched 5 2/3 innings of 2-hit, scoreless relief to improve to 4-0 and did so on 62 pitches after throwing 84 in a win over Howell on Tuesday. By rule, Popes was only eligible to throw up to 66 on Saturday. The senior right-hander replaced fellow right-hander Joe Mauro, who left the game mid-batter with one out in the top of the fifth after feeling discomfort in his lower back.

RBC snuffed out Manalapan’s best scoring opportunity in the top of the eighth inning. P.J. Pape and Rich Cammarata led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Rob DiStefano hit a fly ball to centerfield that sent Luke Lonczak back several steps. Pape tagged up and attempted to take third on the catch, but Lonczak made a perfect one-hop throw to third, where Landon Laido applied the tag for the double-play. Popes induced an inning-ending pop out two pitches later.

Red Bank Catholic will host No. 6 Howell Saturday in the MCT semifinals.

(8) Toms River North 9, (9) Barnegat 4

Pietro Amodio hit a tie-breaking two-run single in the bottom of the third inning and cracked a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth as the Mariners overcame three first-inning runs by the Bengals to advance past Barnegat and into the OCT quarterfinals Tuesday at top-seeded Toms River East.

Nick Bruno opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first and Jack Haviland and Nick Malinowski delivered back-to-back two-out RBI singles to stake Barnegat to a 3-0 lead before Toms River North stepped the the plate.

The Mariners tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third, which started with back-to-back singles by winning pitcher Dominic Ostroman and Amodio, followed by a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. An error brought the first run home and Cole Garrison picked up an RBI fielder’s choice to make it 3-2. Vinny Vergona made it 3-3 on another RBI ground out.

Owen Stefan singled home a run in the fourth to make it 6-3 prior to Amodio’s RBI double.
