Manalapan Erases 8-0 Deficit, Completes Stunning Comeback to Keep Constitution Division Race Alive
OCEAN TOWNSHIP — The Constitution Division race, already one of the Shore Conference’s most unpredictable battles this spring, will come down to the final day of the season after Manalapan stunned Ocean with one of the wildest comebacks of the year Friday afternoon.
Trailing 8-0 after two innings, Manalapan erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning and overcame multiple deficits to defeat Ocean, 15-14, in a back-and-forth thriller that vaulted the Braves into sole possession of first place in the division standings.
“I told them to go out there and remember why we play,” head coach Kimberly Fiore said. “Win or lose, I am always proud of them as long as they are playing with all their heart. They fought back from an eight-run deficit and won this game.”
Ocean (10-6, 8-4) appeared firmly in control early after building its eight-run advantage through two innings, but Manalapan (10-9, 8-3) steadily chipped away before delivering the decisive blow in the fifth.
The Braves trimmed the deficit to 8-3 in the third inning with three runs on four consecutive hits, setting the stage for a game-changing rally two innings later.
Manalapan sent seven batters to the plate before Ocean recorded an out in the fifth. Co-captain Elissa Lieberman sparked the inning with a four-pitch walk, followed by another free pass to senior Kylie Courter. Freshman Leah Garby then ignited the comeback when she blasted a three-run home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 8-6.

“My approach was to just put the ball in play somewhere,” Garby said. “I wanted to make something happen, and I got a good pitch and swung at it, and it was a home run.”
The Braves were only getting started.
Manalapan eventually sent 12 batters to the plate during the inning. Junior Sophia Miranda, who finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, delivered a two-run single to center field to tie the game at 8-8. One pitch later, junior Sophia Scafuri lined a double to right field to score Miranda and give the Braves their first lead of the afternoon at 9-8. Junior Alexa Shaffer followed with another double to plate Scafuri and extend the lead to 10-8.
“We really had a lot of energy in that inning,” Garby said. “Hit after hit, it carried the momentum into creating a big inning with lots of runs, which was great.”
Ocean responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Sadie Conklin opened the fifth with a four-pitch walk and later scored on a single by sophomore Colleen Zdan. After advancing on an error and a wild pitch, Zdan came home on a sacrifice fly by freshman Taylor Scotto, knotting the game at 10-10.
The momentum swings continued in the sixth when senior Nicole Cammarata delivered a line-drive single to center field that scored freshman Stella Hegel and Miranda, restoring a two-run advantage for Manalapan.
“We have done it so many times that we have left our girls on second and third base,” Fiore said. “It is debilitating when you are in a game like this, but every single one of them today stepped up to that plate, and they knew they had a purpose. Their goal was to bring home every girl they could, and they did.”

After Ocean pulled within a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Braves capitalized on a costly Spartan error in the seventh to create critical separation.
With two outs, Julianna Cherbini reached base on an errant throw from third, igniting another rally. Manalapan pushed across three runs in the inning to build a 15-11 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.
“We had to have our heart in the game,” Lieberman said. “Most teams lose energy about halfway through the game, so keeping the energy is the way to go and an advantage.”
Ocean refused to go away quietly.
Scotto opened the seventh with a single before junior Ryleigh Cerco launched her conference-leading 10th home run of the season, trimming the deficit to 15-13. Scotto and Cerco combined to go 7-for-9 at the plate, with Scotto scoring three runs and Cerco driving in five.
Garby, despite battling through constant pressure in the circle, retired the next two batters before Ocean mounted one final threat. Sadie Miller doubled with two outs, and Ava Sorrentino walked to keep the inning alive. Conklin followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one run.
But with the tying run on base, Garby induced a ground ball from Zdan back to the circle to secure the dramatic victory. The freshman finished with six strikeouts and surpassed 100 strikeouts in her rookie campaign.
“Honestly, Leah, when she gets locked in, she is there, and everything could be crashing down around her, but she is not going to give up, and she will fight,” Fiore said. “She just kept fighting, and she kept going, and that is one of the best things about her. She can see the 8-0 board and be like it is alright, we’re going to get this back.”
The win sets up a de facto division title game on Monday when Manalapan hosts Shore. The Braves can clinch the division outright with a win. A Shore victory Monday would create a three-way tie atop the division standings between Shore, Ocean Township, and Manalapan at 8-4. The three teams would then be declared tri-champions.
The division race has remained tightly contested throughout the spring. Freehold Boro, despite finishing one game back at 7-5 in division play, owns wins over Shore while suffering two losses apiece to Ocean and Manalapan. Shore, meanwhile, swept its season series against Ocean.
“Honestly, no matter what happens on Monday, every single team in this division has worked hard,” Fiore said. “I feel this division is a true, solid matchup. Every team we’ve faced has had its challenges, and it’s been a battle. I think that is why we have the records that we have. We have random losses here and big wins there. It is a great matchup and all of these teams are right on par.”
