Some seasons stand apart from the rest. Seasons in which a player is so dominant that opponents have no answer, whether she is standing in the batter’s box or commanding the circle. For St. John Vianney senior Madison McDougall, the 2026 season was exactly that.

Already established as one of the Shore Conference’s premier pitchers during her four-year career, McDougall elevated her game to another level as a hitter this season. Her offensive production reached new heights, leaving opposing pitchers with few options and making every at-bat a challenge.

McDougall set career highs in batting average, runs scored, hits, home runs, triples, doubles, and RBI’s while helping lead St. John Vianney to a perfect 30-0 record and a third Non-Public A state championship during her career.

When the stakes were highest, McDougall delivered some of her best performances. She hit six home runs during the postseason, beginning with a two-run homer in the Shore Conference Tournament championship game against Donovan Catholic that helped propel the Lancers to a 5-1 victory.

Her dominance continued throughout the state tournament, where she homered in every game. That stretch included a solo home run in the state championship game against Mount St. Dominic, the No. 2-ranked team in New Jersey. In the sectional semifinal against rival Red Bank Catholic, McDougall launched two home runs and drove in seven runs in an 11-0 victory.

While her offensive numbers grabbed headlines, McDougall continued to excel in the circle. She struck out a career-high 312 batters, becoming just the 27th player in New Jersey history to reach the 1,000-strikeout milestone. Over 164.1 innings, she allowed only seven earned runs, posted a 0.30 ERA, and surrendered just 56 hits.

One of the most remarkable performances of her season came in the second round of the Shore Conference Tournament against Freehold Boro. McDougall struck out 19 of the 21 batters she faced, including the first 18 hitters of the game before the streak ended in the seventh inning. She finished the season with seven no-hitters.

During St. John Vianney’s state championship run, McDougall pitched 22 innings, struck out 42 batters, and allowed only two earned runs. She capped her high school career with a 10-0 shutout victory in the state final, allowing just two hits while striking out 10 batters over six innings.

What makes McDougall’s accomplishments even more impressive is the adversity she overcame to achieve them. Her availability for the season was uncertain as she recovered from offseason surgery to repair an injury. Several setbacks during the rehabilitation process raised questions about whether she would be ready for Opening Day.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anybody put in that level of work with the stuff she’s had going on these last four years,” St. John Vianney head coach Kim Lombardi-McDougall said. “It’s tremendous to see that she doesn’t feel sorry for herself and just wants to come out and continue to help the team out in any way she can.”

Players with McDougall’s talent often leave the area to continue their careers at nationally recognized programs. Shore Conference fans, however, will not have to travel far to watch one of the area’s all-time greats continue her softball journey. Following in her mother’s footsteps, McDougall will continue her career at Monmouth University, where she will compete in the Coastal Athletic Association.
