Coming to the Shore Conference in 2026: Thursday Night Football
The Shore Conference is taking a page out of the NFL’s playbook and introducing Thursday Night Football during the 2026 season.
It wasn’t created because the conference is selling the rights to Amazon Prime or rolling out Color Rush uniforms. (Although sign us up for the latter). It’s for a more practical issue – there’s not enough officials to handle a huge slate of games on Friday nights.
Marlboro athletic director Dave Ryden, who is the chairman of the Shore Conference football committee, said he and new Shore Conference executive director Rich Carroll were contacted by the assigner for Shore Conference officials about spreading out the games over more days.
With all but a handful of Shore Conference schools now having lights to play night games, almost all of them are playing on Friday night in the 42-team conference.

“There’s not enough official crews, so they’ve been kind of piecing crews together,” Ryden said. “They asked if it’s possible to play some Thursday night games. I said we can’t force teams to do that, so let’s see what we can do.”
Teams have been playing on Thursday nights in previous seasons, whether it’s to avoid traffic-choked, summer Fridays in Week Zero or due to Jewish holidays on Fridays. Both of those scenarios have led teams to move games to Thursday in the first two weeks of the 2026 season. A host of teams will open the season on Thursday, Aug. 27.
However, this season, the Shore Conference has decided to take the shortage of officials and turn it into a positive by introducing a Game of the Week in each county every Thursday. The hope is to get two Thursday night games – a Monmouth County matchup and an Ocean County matchup.

The conference also looks to promote all of its teams, not just the powerhouses lodged in the top of the rankings.
“We’re trying to get more exposure, and we’re trying to get everyone exposure,” Ryden said.
The games will also be livestreamed by Big State Sports, according to Ryden.
“I think it’s going to be pretty cool,” Ryden said. “The hard part is scheduling because you don’t want to have a team play on a Saturday and then come right back and play on a Thursday. You can’t give them a short week like that.”
The schedule is still being finalized, but just about every week of the regular season will feature Thursday night spotlight games, according to Ryden.
The full master schedule can be found here.
