Howell 9, Middletown South 6

Senior attackman Jayden Devino scored four goals and seniors Colin Finnegan, Colin Spires, and Tristan DeLucia led a superb defensive effort in front of senior goalie Adam Baker to lead the Rebels (6-1, 3-1) past the Eagles (4-3, 3-1) for a key division victory.

Junior attackman Mike Kelly scored twice in his return after missing the last three games with an injury and Baker made eight saves against a potent Middletown South offense. Finnegan, senior midfielder Nick Turturro, and junior midfielder Cole Reinsdorf each scored once, while senior middie Vin Meehan and junior attackman Mason Morgan had two assists each.

Howell led 5-4 at halftime. Middletown South tied the score at five on a goal by senior Joe Sarci at 9:29 of the third quarter, but Howell responded on goals by Devino and Kelly to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter. After sophomore Ryan Colacichi scored his third of the game to cut the Eagles’ deficit to 7-6 early in the fourth quarter, Devino netted his fourth of the game and Turturro added his first with 3:10 to play.

Colacichi led Middletown South with three goals while Sarci scored twice and junior Luke Gaffney scored once. Senior goalie Matt Mason made six saves.

Middletown South’s loss leaves Toms River East in sole possession of first place in the Colonial Division. Howell, Middletown South, Manalapan, Middletown North, and Point Boro are all one game out.

 

Nonconference

CBA 7, Spire Academy (OH) 6 (2OT)

Freshman attackman Jackson Chaney took a pass from junior attackman Caden Lucich and buried the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Colts (6-3) rallied to win another thriller in the first game of their trip to Arizona.

CBA led 2-0 after the first quarter on a pair of goals by senior midfielder Davis Campbell. Spire then exploded for six goals in a span of less than two minutes early in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead. The Colts settled down midway through the quarter and began their rally on a goal by sophomore Turner Cooke to make it 6-3 at halftime. Lucich scored off an assist from freshman Chase Grimando in the third quarter to pull CBA within two goals entering the fourth where freshmen Danny Varone scored in the opening minute to make it a 6-5 game. Freshman Anthony Lembo delivered the game-tying goal with 6:41 left in regulation.

Junior goalie Shayne Boresen made 11 saves for CBA while freshman FOGO Nick Mangelli went 7-for-13 at the X.
