Public State Tournament
State Championship
Group 1
At The College of New Jersey
Mountain Lakes 10, Rumson-Fair Haven 7
The Lakers (14-8) defeated the Bulldogs (18-7) to capture their 17th state championship in program history, the most of any public school in the state, behind a game-high five goals from senior attacker Holden Gillespie. Junior attacker Lawson Fagan finished with three goals. Senior attacker Massimo Corvelli added two goals.
Sophomore attacker Teddy Whitehouse netted three goals in the loss for the Bulldogs. Senior attacker Luke Lydon finished with two goals. Senior midfielder Blake Ahmann and sophomore midfielder Liam Haggerty each added a goal.
The Bulldogs fell behind 6-3 at halftime despite outshooting the Lakers 22-9. They were able to cut the deficit to 7-6 at the end of the third quarter and 8-7 with four minutes to go, but Mountain Lakes added the last two goals off of a turnover and an empty net on the 10-man ride to seal the game.
Rumson-Fair Haven was forced to play without two of their best players in senior midfielder Joseph Whitehouse, who injured his knee in the sectional final, and junior defender John Paik.
The Bulldogs will graduate a highly accomplished 10 player senior class that includes the likes of Joseph Whitehouse, Lydon, Ahmann, and defender Toby Najenson.
They will return a talented group of underclassmen including Teddy Whitehouse, Haggerty, Kevin Collard, John Paik, Danny Sullivan, Kellen Winter, Jaden Cavise, Peter Kessler, and Beau Devine.
