Shore Conference Tournament Pool Play

Group 1

No. 8 Ocean 2, Toms River North 1

Senior Erin Toppi headed in a free kick with 2:20 to go in the game for her second goal of the day to lift the Spartans (12-1) over the Mariners (7-6). Toppi also scored the game-tying goal from 35 yards out in the 58th minute.

“We use her (Toppi) offensively and defensively and put her in spots where we know she is going to be able to win the ball,” Ocean head coach Alex Pickett said. “It is truly amazing to see how far she has come from freshman year all the way to senior year. She is an amazing player.”

Sophomore Chloe Thomas put TRN up early in the first half off an assist from Lauren Kuhn.

“I told them we are 11-1 and none of that really matters if we do not make the Shore Conference Tournament,” Pickett said. “The record is great and all, but it all comes down to this game and unfortunately that is just how it worked out this year. You hope it does not work out this way, but with our pod play both of us (TRN) should be going into the tournament, but it comes down to one game. I tried to hype them up and not make them too nervous and keep playing our game.”
