NJSIAA Girls Basketball Opening Round Scoreboard Thursday, Feb. 27

Central Jersey Group 4

(7) Freehold Township 48, (10) Marlboro 47

Trailing by one point in the closing seconds of the game, Gaby Parker scored the game winner to help put the Patriots into the second round of CJG4. The game went back and forth from the opening quarter with Marlboro leading after the first quarter and Freehold Township leading at halftime. Madison Sciarrino and Parker both scored 15 points to lead the Patriots and Ava Giordano added 11 points. Freshman Mackenzie Klatsky drained three 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 16 points for Marlboro.

(1) Hillsborough 69, (16) Long Branch 39

Hillsborough outscored Long Branch 26-5 in the first quarter and the Green Wave could not get back in it. Senior Leomary Diaz-Merino ended her career with a team-high 15 points and 5 rebounds for Long Branch.

 

Central Jersey Group 2

(8) Holmdel 53, (9) Spotswood 39

Holmdel jumped out to a 23-5 lead in the first quarter and held off an 18-8 run by Spotswood in the second quarter to win their opening round game in CJG2. Senior Mackenzie Teevan posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Freshman Claire Gillespie scored a game-hgih 15 points for Holmdel. Holmdel will play top seeded Manasquan in the second round.

(4) Point Boro 50, (13) Governor Livingston 42

Point Boro jumped out to a 21-10 first quarter lead and held on to advance into the second round of CJG2. Senior Vanessa Haas scored a game-high 21 points and both Sarah Dahl and Emily Marinelli added 12 points for the Panthers. Point Boro will host No.5 Delaware Valley in the second round.

(11) Wall 48,  (6) Metuchen 36

Wall was able to get out to a 13-5 lead in the first quarter and got into halftime leading 26-14 in their opening round game in CJG2. Senior Maria Amitie scored a career-high 24 points and Erin McBarron added 12 points to lead Wall to the upset win. Wall will travel to play the No. 3 seed Bordentown in the second round.

(2) Rumson-Fair Haven  65, (15) Raritan 20

Rumson’s defense held Raritan to just 5 first half points to advance into the second round of CJG2. Three players scored double-digits with Sylvie Notine scoring a game-high 14 points and Annabelle Costello adding 12 points for Rumson. Angela Peduto scored a team-high 12 points for Raritan. Rumson will host Johnson in the second round.

 

South Jersey Group 4

(3) Howell 79, (14) Vineland 50

Leading by four after the first quarter, Howell outscored Vineland 24-11 in the second quarter to advance into the SJG4 second round. Four players scored double-digits with Kylee Beam scoring a game-high 20 points and Payton Smith added 18 points for the Rebels.

(2) Cherokee 59, (15) Southern 29

Cherokee jumped ahead of Southern with a 17-3 lead at the end of the 1st quarter and never looked back. Freshman Leah Weiner scored a game-high 19 points in the win for Cherokee. Senior Samantha Russell scored a team-high 9 points in the loss for the Rams.

 

South Jersey Group 2

(7) Manchester 63, (10) Pleasantville 34

Manchester jumped all over Pleasantville, outscoring them 29-7 in the first quarter and continued to add to their lead to win their first round game in SJG2. Sophomore Madeline Nolan scored a game-high 20 points  and had 4 steals and  Marisiya Goins added 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for Manchester. Manchester will travel to play No. 2 Cinnaminson in the second round.

(4) Barnegat 69, (13) Collingswood 32

Barnegat, who returned to full strength last week, outscored Collingswood 35-12 in the first half to advance into the second round of SJG2 sectional. Seniors Emma Thornton (21 points, 19 rebounds) and Zemirah Enalls (22 points, 14 rebounds) posted double-doubles and Riley Fitzpatrick added 16 points for Barnegat.
