Shore Conference Tournament

Opening Round

(23) Freehold Twp. 3, (10) Raritan 2

George Burdge led off the top of the seventh with a double and scored the go-ahead run when Raritan threw the ball away on Christian Borromeo’s sacrifice bunt, giving the Patriots the winning run in a victory over a Rockets team that swept them in Class C South divisional play last week.

Junior right-hander Jackson Redmond pitched two scoreless innings of relief to both pick up his fourth win and close out the win on the mound. Redmond pitched a no-hitter vs. Raritan in a 3-0 Patriots loss on Tuesday.

Redmond took over for starter Matt Nuccio right after Raritan tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth. Raritan starting pitcher Alan Warren led off with a double and Jake Ricchuiti beat out an infield single before catcher Matt Melendez lined an RBI single to centerfield to score Warren with the tying run while pushing pinch-runner Marco Brown to second base.

Redmond took over and induced a shallow fly-out to centerfield, followed by a pair of pop-outs to wiggle out of trouble with the score still tied, 2-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Antonio Lamberti reached on a one-out infield single and Warren kept the game alive with a two-out single, but Redmond ended the game on a strikeout to strand the tying and winning runs.

Freehold jumped on top, 2-0, in the top of the second inning on a pair of sacrifice flies by Nick Madonia and Nick Schicchi. Raritan struck back with an RBI single by Jobby Dekis to pull within 2-1 in the bottom of the third.

Freehold Township will play at No. 7 Jackson Memorial in Monday’s round of 16.

(15) Rumson-Fair Haven 4, (18) Southern 1

Luke Gallagher hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and Owen O’Toole followed with a two-run home run to the short porch in rightfield at Hal Lorme Field and the Bulldogs pulled out a win over the Rams to earn a round-of-16 date at No. 2 Toms River East on Monday — five days after Rumson beat Toms River East in Rumson in a regular-season game.

Rumson tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning to get freshman Brady Williams off the hook on the mound after the rookie right-hander pitched the first four innings. Casper Billington singled and later scored on a two-out error to pull Rumson even.

Hunter Beattie took over on the mound and pitched three scoreless frames to earn his second win in relief this week.

Southern took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the third inning that extended the inning for Mike Kaczynski, who hammered an RBI triple to centerfield to give the Rams and starter Tyler McLeod a 1-0 lead.

(11) Point Beach 12, (22) Toms River North 2 (6 Innings)

Shortstop Antonio Acevedo kicked off a 4-for-4 game at the plate with the first of his three doubles — a two-run two-bagger that capped a five-run first inning and ignited a Garnet Gulls rout of the Mariners.

Dan Lubach also singled home a run in the first, Chris Napolitano and Brody Powers each added an RBI double and both Tommy Conroy and Noah Banick singled home a run in the fifth. Powers then ended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to activate the 10-run rule.

Bennett Moberg pitched four scoreless innings before exiting with 64 pitches for Point Beach, which will travel to play No. 6 Ranney Monday in the SCT round of 16.

(21) Central 4, (12) Holmdel 0

Central scored two runs on a two-out dropped line drive in the outfield in the third and another in the fourth on a two-out wild pitch — all the help left-hander Vinny Berardi needed to pick up the victory on the mound while pitching the Golden Eagles past the Hornets.

Centerfielder and No. 9 hitter Mike Nieves added an RBI single in the top of the sixth and Chase Macri took over in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff walk by Berardi to nail down the combined shutout.

Central will hit the road again Monday to play No. 5 Colts Neck in the SCT round of 16.

(14) Brick 9, (19) Middletown South 0

Peyton Horning hit a two-run double as part of Brick’s five-run first inning, then fired a four-hit shutout to carry the Green Dragons past the Eagles for their first SCT victory since 2016.

Sean Savannah roped a two-run double to open the scoring and Taylor Cavanaugh drove him in with an RBI single for a 3-0 Brick lead. After Shawn McLaughlin cracked a double to put runners on second and third, Horning brought both home with his RBI double to cap the first-inning rally for the Dragons.

Brick added four more runs in the fourth for good measure, with Chris Quick and James Donoghue each singling home a run and Savannah picking up his third RBI with another RBI double.

Brick moves on to play at No. 3 Red Bank Catholic in Monday’s SCT round of 16.

(20) Monmouth 3, (13) Wall 1 (8 Innings)

Collin Denton and John Catanio posted zeroes on the scoreboard through seven innings and Wall blinked first, allowing three unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to help the Falcons advance to the round-of-16 Monday at No. 4 Brick Memorial.

Catanio struck out his 10th and 11th batters of the game for the first two outs of the top of the seventh, at which point he finished his final batter at 113 pitches. Freshman Chris Knight took over and rolled up an inning-ending ground out to send the game to the bottom of the seventh. Denton countered with a one-two-three inning of his own and with 96 pitches through seven, he had 14 more to play with for the bottom of the eighth.

With its ace running out of pitches, Monmouth finally broke through in the top of the eighth. The Falcons drew three straight walks with one out, but Knight bounced back to coax a come-backer to the mound. His throw to home plate, however, was high and popped out of the glove of catcher Frank Soos, allowing the first run of the game to score.

Shortstop Jackson Soos fielded a ground ball and threw home for the force out to record out No. 2 in the inning, but Eddie Segarra came through with a crucial two-out, two-run single into centerfield — just out of the reach of diving Wall centerfielder Jack Murphey.

An error to open up the bottom of the eight gave Wall life and the Crimson Knights made the threat serious when Jackson Soos lined a double down the rightfield line to put runners on second and third with none out and Denton approaching the single-game pitch limit. Austin Harr then smacked a fly ball to leftfield that Hunter Oksen caught on a dive, allowing Davis Harr to tag up and score from third base with Wall’s first run. Denton then induced a pop-out to second base for the second out, but at 113 pitches, his day on the mound was over.

Monmouth turned to Will Theobald to close the game and after intentionally walking Frank Soos to put the potential tying run on base, Theobald struck out the lone batter he pitched to, nailing down the save and sending Monmouth to the SCT round of 16 for the first time since 2018.

(17) Toms River South 11, (16) Howell 0

Centerfielder and No. 9 hitter Canaan Sanzone blasted a two-run home run during a five-run fifth and senior right-hander Aiden Lynch took care of the rest, pitching a four-hit shutout against the Rebels to send the Indians into the SCT round of 16 Monday at top-seeded CBA.

Sanzone later added a double as part of a Toms River South attack that piled up six extra-base hits out of 12 total hits in support of Lynch, who bounced back from his first loss of the season. Brick beat the right-hander on Wednesday, but he threw only 56 pitches in 2 2/3, allowing him to come back on two days of rest to fire a seven-inning complete game on only 76 pitches.
