Ocean County Tournament

Semifinals

(3) Toms River East 4, (2) Point Beach 3

Freshman Carson Frazier hit a go-ahead, bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth inning to catapult Toms River East into the lead and left-hander Jonathan Pallman pitched out of danger in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the save and send the Raiders past the Garnet Gulls and into the OCT championship game for the second straight year.

Point Beach took a 3-1 lead on a two-run double by starting pitcher Tommy Conroy in the bottom of the fourth inning on a line drive to left-center that took a wicked hop over the head of leftfielder Chase Caswell and scored Dan Coleman from second base and Chris Napolitano from first.

Toms River East started the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles from Gavin Toth and Matt Ferrara — each of whom finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Mike Vaccarino sacrificed both runners to second and third and Dan Nafziger worked a one-out walk to bring up Frazier. After hitting a ground-rule double with no one on in his second at bat, Frazier worked the count in his favor, 3-1, and unleashed a line drive into the right-centerfield gap to score all three runners, giving the Raiders a 4-3 lead.

Starting pitcher Mason Pentz pitched a scoreless bottom of the fifth and struck out the first batter of the bottom of the sixth before a one-out single by Napolitano ended his day. Pallman took over with Conroy coming up and coaxed an inning-ending double-play ground ball, with first baseman Jax Buatez stepping on first and firing to Ferrara for the tag-out at second base.

In the bottom of the seventh, Point Beach mounted a two-out threat when Dan Lubach was hit by a pitch and Dan Storch lined a 2-2 pitch into centerfield for a single, giving the Garnet Gulls the potential winning runs on the base paths. Pallman battled with Carson Pfeifer to a 3-2 count and induced a pop-fly on the infield that Pallman took himself, squeezing the final out as he fell to the ground.

The two teams each made two outs at home plate, with Nafziger throwing out a runner at home right after he committed an error with one out in the bottom of the second inning.

(1) Brick Memorial 5, (12) Southern 0

Brody Moore and Zach Pirnik combined on a six-hit shutout and the Mustangs rode that pitching and two run-scoring rallies past the Rams to earn a trip to the OCT championship game for the second time in five seasons.

Moore also singled and scored the first Brick Memorial run on a Dan Golembiewski sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and later added a sacrifice fly of his own to put Brick Memorial ahead, 5-0, in the bottom of the fourth. Brayden Nalducci singled home a run in the first and Dan Popovitch beat out an infield single for an RBI as part of the three-run fourth for Brick Memorial.

With his first-inning single, Moore ended a stretch of 8 2/3 hitless innings during the OCT by Southern senior right-hander Tyler McLeod, who came on in relief in each of Southern’s first two wins in the tournament. McLeod pitched five no-hit innings to earn the win over Jackson Memorial in round one, then spun 3 2/3 hitless frames to earn the win over Central Regional in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.

Brick Memorial will go for its first OCT championship since 1996 Tuesday against defending champion Toms River East. The two Class A North divisional foes split the regular-season series, with the road team winning both times.

Quarterfinals

(2) Red Bank Catholic 3, (10) Ocean 1

Charlie Stumberger hit a game-tying RBI single in the third, a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth and A.J. Sciametta added an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the sixth to back senior right-hander Luke Meyers in a Caseys win over the Spartans.

Ocean took the lead in the top of the third, when Ben Robinson tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Will Walsh. RBC answered in the bottom half of the inning, with Stumberger lining a two-out single to rightfield to score Luke Scaturro.

Stumberger stepped in facing the same situation in a tie game in the bottom of the fifth — first and second with two out — and flipped an RBI single into leftfield for a 2-1 Caseys lead.

Connor Tongring belted a one-out triple in the top of the sixth inning to give Ocean a chance to tie the game, but Meyers coaxed back-to-back infield pop-outs to end the threat, as well as his outing.

Sciametta then rocked a two-out, inside-the-park home run to centerfield to give the Caseys some insurance and Ryan Prior worked around a one-out walk to close out the victory while earning his first save of the season.

Red Bank Catholic will host third-seeded Colts Neck Monday in the Monmouth County Tournament semifinal, with the winner playing CBA in Thursday’s championship game at Brookdale Community College.

Semifinals

(1) CBA 8, (4) Ranney 4

Catcher Dan Tsimbinos tied the game with an RBI double that ignited a five-run rally in the third inning and finished 3-for-3 at the plate as the Colts beat the Panthers for the third time this season, with their latest triumph sending them back to the Monmouth County Tournament championship game for the second straight year.

Ryan Wetmore and A.J. Fiore each singled home a run in the home third, during which CBA flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead. Ranney took the lead on an RBI single by freshman Brayden Cox in the top of the third and cut it to 5-2 on a balk by CBA starter Sean Loggie that forced in a run.

Colts third baseman Dan Russo answered with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to extend the CBA lead to 7-2 and the Colts added another run on an error to make it 8-2 through five.

Loggie struck out 12 batters through five innings and came back out for the top of the sixth. He induced a fly out to centerfielder Will Fahey to open the inning, but issued a walk to Curt Chropuvka before Nate Fuller chased him with a single to put a pair of runners on. Shane Langan took over and immediately hit a batter and surrendered an RBI single to catcher Brody Garguilo, but the senior right-hander bounced back to strikeout the next two batters and end the threat.
