Class A North

No. 8 Middletown South 2, No. 3 Red Bank Catholic 1

Middletown South scratched across two early runs against RBC ace Ryan Prior and junior Peter DeNicola finished off his first career complete game in pitching the Eagles past the Caseys.

Mike Frandsen led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored on a throwing error by RBC catcher Aiden Funk in an attempt to throw out Brendan Sliva at second on a stolen base attempt.

RBC answered with an RBI single by Charlie Stumberger in the top of the third, but Middletown South kept it at one run when rightfielder Jack Buono threw out Dylan Passo attempting to score from second on Stumberger’s single for the second out of the inning. The Eagles immediately countered with a run in the bottom of the inning, with Rob Chiusano drawing a two-out walk, stealing second base, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a passed ball.

Red Bank Catholic threatened against DeNicola in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and the junior right-hander escaped trouble each time. He allowed the first two runners to reach in the fourth and bounced back by retiring the next three. In the sixth, RBC loaded the bases with one out, but DeNicola denied the Caseys with a strikeout and a pop out to end the threat.

In the top of the seventh, Funk drew a one-out walk and moved into second base on a ground out by Stumberger to put the tying run in scoring position. Middletown South elected to intentionally walk Caseys home-run (four) and RBI (14) leader Jake Frankel and the strategy paid off when DeNicola induced a game-ending ground ball to Sliva at shortstop for the fielder’s choice out.

Class B North

Howell 11, Rumson-Fair Haven 10 (11 Innings)

Catcher Brody Loch hit a game-winning RBI single with two out in the bottom of the 11th and the Rebels rallied twice with clutch home runs to extend the game and beat the Bulldogs in extra innings.

Howell trailed, 8-2, heading to the bottom of the sixth inning and Aaron Wojenski started the comeback with a two-run home run to pull the Rebels within 8-4. In the bottom of the seventh, Waylon Cavanaugh belted a game-tying grand slam with one out to tie the game, 8-8.

Rumson regained the lead on a two-run home run by freshman Max Martin in the top of the 10th inning, but Howell again answered with a long ball. Jack Quinn came through with a two-run homer with one out to tie the game, 10-10, in the bottom of the 10th.

Logan Koeppel pitched a scoreless top of the 11th inning for Howell to give his team a chance to win the game in the 11th, which the Rebels did. Vinny Agnello and Wojenski each drew a walk with none out, but Rumson pitcher Lucca Strome got a huge double-play to move within an out of pushing the game to the 12th. Loch, however, ended the game with a line drive to centerfield that scored Agnello from third with the winning run.

Rumson built an 8-2 lead thanks to three of its four home runs in the game. Nick Margulies crushed a two-run home run to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the first inning and Max Mazzucca hit two — a two-run shot in the third inning and a solo job in the fifth.

Raritan 9, Monmouth 4

Alan Warren and Jobby Dekis provided RBI hits during a five-run bottom of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in a Rockets win over the Falcons — Raritan’s sixth straight since since losing to Holmdel on opening day.

Warren broke a 4-4 deadlock with an RBI single and Raritan stretched its lead to 7-4 on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for Antonio Lamberti, followed by a bases-loaded walk by Jake Ricchuiti. Dekis then capped the scoring with a two-run single.
