Al Kunzman Ocean County Tournament

First Round

(5) Lacey 2, (12) Central 1 (12 Innings)

Brayden Messina led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a double and Russell Davies brought him home with a game-winning RBI single to give the Lions a walk-off win over the Golden Eagles in the first round of the OCT, setting up a quarterfinal game against the winning of Saturday’s first-round game between No. 4 Brick Memorial and No. 13 Brick.

Messina’s hit was Lacey’s first since Joe Geiger clocked his second triple of the game, which came with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kam Schlueter took over on the mound for starter Vinny Trematerra and fired a strikeout for the second out, then retired the next batter on a ground out to extend the game to the ninth.

Central put runner on first and second in both the seventh and 11th innings, but Lacey sophomore Jayden McNeil worked out of trouble in the seventh on his way to completing eight innings and winning pitcher Andrew Hollister got out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts in the 11th.

Central’s lone run came in the top of the first on an RBI single by Jack Tietjen after C.J. Dybus and Tommy Lavorgna led off the game with back-to-back singles. Lacey tied it in the bottom of the second when Geiger led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Dalton Johnson.

Brick 6, St. Rose 5

James Donoghue hit an RBI single in the second and a two-run single in the fourth as the Green Dragons took advantage of a wave of St. Rose errors  early, then held on to pick up the win over the Purple Roses.

Lucas Ferlise got St. Rose on the board with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth and pulled the Purple Roses within 6-5 with another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but was thrown out attempting to stretch the sixth-inning single into a double, stranding the potential tying run on third base.

John Renda started the relay from leftfield that cut down Ferlise at second base, then came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. An error and a walk put the winning runs on base and Renda closed out the game by coaxing a pop out and a fielder’s choice ground out to shortstop Brayden Heatter to end the game.

Coaches Vs. Cancer

At Jerome Ave. Park, Margate

Cherokee 5, Jackson 4

Freshman Drew Gable hit a grand slam in the top of the third inning to open the scoring and later broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI double in the top of the seventh as the Chiefs battled past the Jaguars.

Jackson clawed back with four runs in the bottom of the third behind RBI singles by Carney O’Donnell and Matt Galayda, with a fielding error in the outfield allowing a second run to score on Galayda’s hit, which tied the game, 4-4.

Cherokee’s bullpen fired 3 2/3 hitless innings to quiet the Jackson bats after a fast start. LaSalle commit Brett Jackson struck out the side in order on 11 pitches to close out the victory.
