NJSIAA Tournament

Sectional Finals

Central Jersey Group 3

(3) Brick Memorial 7, (1) Northern Burlington 0

Senior left-hander Brody Moore pitched a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and supplied RBI singles in back-to-back innings to carry the Mustangs past the defending Group III champion Greyhounds for their first ever NJSIAA sectional championship.

Moore and Northern Burlington starter Jordan Gilligo each faced the minimum six batters through two innings on fewer than 20 pitches apiece, but Brick Memorial broke up the pitcher’s duel with a five-run third inning. Senior second baseman Trevor Kish launched a solo home run over the leftfield fence to lead off the inning and after three straight batters reached — and Gilligo erased one with a successful pick-off at second base — Moore punched a single through the middle to score senior leftfielder Gavin McCue from second.

Gilligo was one out from escaping the inning with his team within two runs, but sophomore third baseman Matt McGlynn delivered a back-breaking, bases-clearing double to left-center, just out of the reach of diving centerfielder Jake Bartlett.

Armed with a 5-0 lead, Moore bulldozed the bottom of the Northern Burlington order in the third, then roped another RBI single into centerfield in the top of the fourth to score Kish with two out and extend the Mustangs lead to 6-0.

Moore hit third baseman Cole Marchetti with a 3-2 fastball to issue his first base-runner of the game, but still struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth inning. Second baseman Brenner Pourghassen broke up Moore’s no-hit big with a clean single to centerfield with two out in the bottom of the fifth, to which Moore responded with his eighth strikeout to push the game into the sixth inning.

Senior first baseman Dan Golembiewski tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single through the right side for a 7-0 Brick Memorial lead and in the bottom of the inning, Moore bounced back from a one-out single by shortstop Brent Walulak by snaring a comebacker to the mound and starting the 1-6-3, inning-ending double-play.

Moore needed only five pitches to retire the middle of Northern Burlington’s lineup on three fly outs in the bottom of the seventh, with junior centerfielder Cayden Concepcion squeezing the final out.

Shortstop Tyler Garbooshian’s streak of four straight games with a home run ended Friday, but the senior reached base in all four of his trips to the plate. He ripped the first pitch of the game through the left side for a lead-off single, was hit by the first pitch of his second plate appearance, then drew two walks on the way to scoring a pair of runs.

Central Jersey Group 1

(3) Point Beach 9, (5 ) Shore 1

Senior Tommy Conroy jump-started a six-run third inning with an opposite-field home run, capped it with a two-run single and pitched the final two innings to close out the Garnet Gulls’ fourth Central Jersey Group 1 championship of the last five seasons and second in three seasons vs. the Blue Devils.

Senior first baseman Dylan Ryan staked Point Beach to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single through the middle in the bottom of the second inning and Conroy led off the bottom of the third by swatting a deep fly ball that stayed inside the foul pole as it cleared the fence for a solo home run and a 2-0 Point Beach lead.

Sophomore Thomas Slobiski and Ryan drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 4-0 and sophomore Davin Marquez followed with an RBI infield single to push across the fifth Point Beach run of the game and fourth of the third inning. Conroy then returned to the plate and ripped a single through the right side to score both Slobiski and Ryan and give the Garnet Gulls a 7-0 lead.

Winning pitcher Bennett Moberg surrendered the lone run against him on a ground out in the top of the fourth and Point Beach responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Slobiski lined an RBI single to centerfield and Marquez worked Point Beach’s third bases-loaded walk of the game to notch his second RBI of the sectional final.

Moberg worked a one-two-three fifth in his final inning of the game, with Conroy closing out the victory with a two-inning outing. Point Beach will host South Jersey champion Woodstown Monday in the Group 1 semifinal.
