Shore Conference Tournament

Semifinals

(6) CBA 5, (15) Colts Neck 2

Senior left-hander Danny DiTullio shook off a pair of first-inning runs to silence the Colts Neck lineup of the ensuing five innings and the Colts offense capitalized on three two-out errors by the Cougars to pull out the win and advance to the SCT championship game against No. 5 Rumson-Fair Haven Sunday at ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood.

Colts Neck jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-out, two-run single by senior third baseman Joe Pignatelli that dropped just to the fair side of the rightfield line. One batter earlier, the Cougars suffered a significant loss to the lineup, when second baseman and leadoff hitter Dan Annunziata had to be helped off the field after a collision at home plate on a force-out and missed the rest of the game.

DiTullio induced a ground-ball out to end the first and faced the minimum number of batters over his next five innings of work. The lone batter to reach against him after the first inning with senior Ronan Kiely on a four-pitch walk and CBA junior catcher Griffin Kilcullen erased him by throwing Kiely out attempting to steal second base for the final out of the top of the third. After throwing 35 pitches in the first inning, DiTullio threw 33 over the next three innings and completed six innings on 92 pitches.

Of course, CBA had to respond at the plate after conceding two runs in the top of the first and the Colts did so immediately, with help from Colts Neck’s defense. Jayden Matejicka continued his May hot streak with a leadoff single and stole both second and third base. The first of two two-out errors on the infield during the inning allowed Matejicka to score and senior shortstop Colin Hoverter followed with a single that put two runners in scoring position after he advanced to second base on a throw to third from the outfield. CBA then added two more on a throwing error, with Pignatelli making a diving stop to his left but pulling the throw just wide of first after he popped up off the ground.

A two-out dropped pop-up in the bottom of the second spoiled a chance for Colts Neck starter Ryan Rude to pitch a one-two-three inning and CBA took advantage by following the error with a single by senior Jared Matejicka and back-to-back walks by juniors Dylan Reynholds and Ryan Wetmore, the second of which forced in a run for a 4-2 CBA lead.

The Colts added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Kilcullen on a shallow fly ball that dropped in just out of the reach of Colts Neck leftfielder Austin Hardy.

DiTullio struck out the side on 11 pitches in the top of the fifth, then finished his outing with a one-two-three sixth before Declan Doogan took over for the seventh. Doogan retired the side on 11 pitches to earn his third save of the season.

No. 9 Toms River East 4, St. Rose 0

Senior Lucas Melton blasted his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning and four Toms River East pitchers combined on a one-hitter in a Raiders (14-10) win over the Purple Roses (13-9-1).

After Melton’s two-run shot put Toms River East ahead, 3-0, senior Liam Scallon finished off three innings during which he faced the minimum nine batters. Scallon hit Kingston Balthazar leading off the top of the third inning, then induced a 6-4-3 double-play, followed by a strikeout to end the inning and his night on the mound. Senior James Whalen worked around a walk to pitch a scoreless fourth, then struck out two in a perfect fifth.

Junior Logan Macchia struck out the side in order in the top of the sixth and Jonathan Pallman struck out the first batter he faced before St. Rose starting pitcher James Alesso fought off a single into shallow left field to end the combined no-hit bid. Pallman struck out the next two batters to strike out the side and end the game.
