(3) Hunterdon Central 12, (6) Manalapan 7

Senior Anthony Foti highlighted a huge final game with a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the sixth inning, but the Red Devils came back with eight runs in the sixth inning following an injury delay of more than 30 minutes and put the game away to earn a spot in Wednesday’s sectional semifinal vs. No. 7 Jackson.

With a runner on second and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Tristan Ovalle hit a hard ground ball to the right of second baseman Vin Matteis, who made a diving attempt at the ball. The ball skipped off the ground and struck Matteis in the face, which briefly knocked him unconscious, according to Manalapan coach Brian Boyce. Matteis was alert and responsive when he was taken away off the field via ambulance, Boyce said.

From there, Hunterdon Central exploded for eight runs in the inning, taking an 8-7 lead on a three-run home run by Chase Reinhard.

In the top of the inning, Manalapan erased a 4-2 deficit by loading the bases with one out on a hit batter and back-to-back singles by Jayden Prokopenko and Devin Kain. Jake Masterton picked up a big strikeout for the second out, but walked P.J. Pape to force in a run, cutting the Hunterdon Central lead to 4-3. Foti then launched a 2-1 pitch to left and cleared the fence for a go-ahead grand slam that gave Manalapan a three-run lead. The grand slam was the first homer in Foti’s three seasons as a varsity starter.

Pape and Foti led off the game with a single and a double on consecutive at-bats and freshman Josh Sosinov singled to left to drive in Pape. Rob DiStefano then plated Foti with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Manalapan lead in the top of the first. Hunterdon Central immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the first on a two-out bases-loaded walk, followed by a two-run single by J.P. Santos.

(7) Jackson 12, (15) Franklin 1 (5 innings)

Jackson scored eight runs with two out in the second inning, capped by a crushed two-run home run by senior S.J. Wall — his second in as many games — as the Jaguars steamrolled the Warriors to earn a trip to the sectional semifinals Wednesday at No. 3 Hunterdon Central.

Senior Carney O’Donnell opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and followed up with an RBI single in the second and a two-run double in the third to give him a four-RBI game by the third inning. Sophomore Dominic Zolla and classmate Mike Fogarty hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-0 and after O’Donnell’s RBI single and a two-run error plated made it 6-1, Mason Ciccariello hammered an RBI double to the rightfield fence to push the lead to 7-1. Wall then tagged his two-run shot to leftfield for a 9-1 lead.

Matt Galayada surrendered two hits in each of the five innings he pitched, but Franklin did not score until a two-out hit by Elijah Zavesky in the fifth inning.

(3) Brick Memorial 11, (6) Hopewell Valley 1 (6 innings)

Tyler Gabooshian hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first and did it again in the fourth for his third long ball in the first two rounds of the tournament, sparking the Mustangs to a run-rule win over the Bulldogs that sends them to the sectional semifinals Wednesday at No. 2 Colts Neck.

Garbooshian capped his day with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, followed by RBI singles by Dan Golembiewski and winning pitcher Brody Moore that ended the game.

Golembiewski crushed a solo home run in the first as well and Michael Figner hit the first of his two doubles to drive in a third first-inning run for the fast-starting Mustangs. The home run was the 11th of the season for Golembiewski, which leads the Shore Conference.

Brody Moore pitched a two-hitter to improve to 7-0 and helped his cause with an RBI single in the second to extend the Brick Memorial lead to 7-0. Trevor Kish made it 6-0 in the bottom of the third with a two-run double.

(2) Colts Neck 4, (7) Red Bank 1

R.J. Conover hit an RBI triple in the second and RBI singles in both the third and fifth innings to back Colts Neck’s mound duo of Ryan Rude and Ryan Spencer, who pitched the Cougars past the Bucs and into the sectional semifinals Wednesday against No. 3 Brick Memorial.

Red Bank struck first on run-scoring single by Bret Laude in the top of the second inning that resulted in an outfield error that allowed the run to score. Red Bank starter Casey Lillis hit Ronan Kiely leading off the bottom of the inning and Conover followed by lashing an RBI triple to centerfield. Joe Pignatelli followed with an RBI single that gave Colts Neck a 2-1 lead.

Rude notched his eighth strikeout for the first out of the top of the fifth, but surrendered a single to Lillis and issued a walk on the next two batters. Spencer took over and stifled the threat by inducing a flyout and finishing the inning with a strikeout. Spencer struck out the side in order in the sixth and after a Jack Monahan single and Casey Lillis walk brought the tying run to the plate for Red Bank with one out in the seventh, Spencer ended the game with two more strikeouts. In his fourth save of season — all in the last three weeks, Spencer struck out seven of the 10 batters he faced.

(4) Wall 9, (12) Raritan 1

John Catanio belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and another one in the bottom of the fourth to lead a 13-hit attack that powered the Crimson Knights past the Rockets and into the sectional semifinals on Wednesday.

Senior left-hander Nick Plevier needed only 79 pitches to pitch a complete-game four-hitter while leaning on a sharp Wall defense. Plevier gave up 22 balls in play and Wall’s defense converted 18 of them into at least one out, including one double-play.

Luke Dana ripped an RBI single to make it 3-0 in the bottom of the third after fellow sophomore Jackson Soos singled and stole second base with two out, then scorched an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-1 just before Catanio went deep to make it 6-1.

Raritan knocked a run off its deficit with a sacrifice fly by Antonio Lamberti in the top of the third, making the score 3-1. Eric Finne set up the scoring opportunity with a lead-off single.

Will Hague drilled a two-run double to left-center in the sixth and Chris Knight capped the scoring with an RBI single.

(2) Governor Livingston 12, (7) Point Boro 4

Reid Bazydlo slugged two home runs, drove in four and pitched six innings to earn the win on the mound in carrying the Highlanders over the Panthers for the second straight season. Governor Livingston will continue its state-title defense in the sectional semifinals vs. No. 11 Robbinsville.

Point Boro pulled even, 2-2, in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI ground out by Aidan Dombrowsky and a sacrifice fly by John Loizos. Governor Livingston regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Michael Basile, followed by the first of Bazydlo’s homers — this one a two-run shot to give the Highlanders a 5-2 lead.

Point Boro inched closer in the top of the sixth when Matt Lokerson doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice RBI by Dombrowsky, with Fin Czaplinski moving Lokerson to third with a single. Governor Livingston, however, put the game away with seven in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a three-run home run by Mississippi State commit Zach Geertsma that made it 8-3. Bazydlo’s second two-run home run capped the scoring in the inning.

(8) Allentown 6, (16) Holmdel 3

Dan Ducalo hit a go-ahead, bases-clearing triple with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored on an RBI single by Dieter Von Harten for good measure as the Redbirds ended Holmdel’s run as a No. 16 seed before it could reach the second week of the tournament.

Holmdel tied the game in the top of the second on a two-run double by Ethan Barry and took the lead in the top of the fourth, when Raum Desai collected his second single of the game and came around to score. Dylan Zammit pitched into the fifth inning and exited the game with the lead after he reached the single-game limit of 110 pitches.

Allentown will travel to No. 4 Wall Wednesday in the sectional semifinal round.

Liam Hennelly and Trevor Doremus each delivered an RBI single and senior left-hander Ryan Barham took care of the rest by pitching a four-hit shutout to out-duel Metuchen sophomore ace James Fenton and send the Blue Devils to the sectional semifinal Wednesday against top-seeded Metuchen.

Centerfielder Enzo Cagliostro also pitched in an RBI on a squeeze bunt, which was one of two successful sacrifice bunts by the senior in the win.

(3) Point Beach 11, (11) Florence 1 (5 innings)

Blake Boss got Florence off to a fast start with a solo home run in the top of the first, but Brody Powers and Carson Pfeifer countered with back-to-back run-scoring doubles in the bottom of the inning and the Garnet Gulls never looked back in a rout of the Flashes.

Powers clocked a two-run double to put Point Beach in front, 2-1, and Pfeifer’s RBI double scored Powers to make it 3-1. Antonio Acevedo made it 6-1 with a two-run single in the third and Thomas Slobiski added an RBI single during what turned into a six-run third inning. Carson Pfeifer ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with Point Beach’s third sacrifice fly of the game, with Tommy Conroy and Devin Ryan accounting for the other two.

Bennett Moberg bounced back from the first-inning home run to fire a five-inning complete-game for the Garnet Gulls, who will travel Wednesday to play No. 2 Piscataway Magnet in the sectional semifinals. This marks the eighth straight season in which Point Beach has reached the Central Group I semifinals.

South Jersey Group III

(9) Toms River South 4, (1) Clearview 3 (9 innings)

Senior centerfielder Canaan Sanzone singled home Toms River South’s first run of the game and helped the Indians close out the win by throwing out the potential tying run at home plate in the bottom of the ninth as Toms River South (17-9) knocked off the top-seeded Pioneers (21-7) to reach the sectional semifinals for the second straight year.

Toms River South held three different one-run leads in the game, the first two of which Clearview erased, which sent the game to extra innings. After both teams came up empty in the eighth, the Indians took the lead in the top of the ninth on a two-out throwing error on an attempted force play at second that would have ended the inning. Anthony Abatemarco led off the inning with a walk and gave way to pinch-runner Jake Gallagher, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sanzone.

After a strikeout for the second out, freshman Andrew Schmidt hit the ball to shortstop to force the error, allowing Gallagher to race home from second with the go-ahead run. Schmidt then returned to the mound after pitching the prior 2 1/3 innings and conceded a base-runner on a throwing error that moved Ean Marcussen to second as the potential tying run.

Schmidt induced a fly out to Sanzone for the first out and Ryan Battista followed with a line drive single into centerfield. Marcussen tested Sanzone by attempting to score and Sanzone made him pay with a perfect throw in the air that beat the runner by several feet and gave Schmidt the second out of the inning. The freshman right-hander then rolled up a ground ball to end the game.

(3) Toms River East 2, (16) Shawnee 1 (9 Innings)

Lucas Melton ignited the game-tying rally with a triple off Shawnee ace Tim Dougherty and won it with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to score Joey DiMeo with the winning run and send the Raiders to a walk-off win over the Renegades.

Both teams entered the seventh inning scoreless and Shawnee broke the deadlock when a sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a run thanks to a throwing error by Jonathan Pallman that allowed the first run to score. In the bottom of the inning, Melton drilled a triple to centerfield and Chase Caswell beat out a bunt to push Melton home with the tying run on an RBI single.

Pallman walked the leadoff batter in the eighth, then retired the next six batters to set the stage for the bottom of the seventh. DiMeo started it with a single through the middle and moved to second on a ground out by Jayce Cappello. Melton that swatted a single into leftfield on a 2-1 count, chasing home DiMeo with the winning run.

Liam Scallon fired five scoreless innings before Pallman took over to start the sixth inning. Dougherty, meanwhile, racked up a career-high 15 strikeouts in a career-high eight innings for the Delaware commit.
