Ted Jarmusz Bracket

(11) St. John Vianney 3, (12) St. Rose 2 (8 Innings)

Anthony Bavaro trotted home with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth after a balk with runners on second and third and the Lancers walked off with a win over the Purple Roses despite managing just two hits against the St. Rose duo of Peter Nolan and Nick Ferrante.

Nolan allowed two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, when SJV took a 2-1 lead on a fielder’s choice ground out by C.J. Simone. Wyatt Lewis scored from third on the play and Luke Jafar-Bodnar sprinted home all the way from second as St. Rose attempted to turn the inning-ending double-play.

St. Rose tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh, which Tristan Ferlise led off with a walk, followed by a double by Nolan. Winning pitcher Matt Baczor got a strikeout for the first out, but James Alesso hit a ground ball that SJV could not field cleanly, allowing Ferlise to score. Baczor halted the rally at a single run by ending the inning with a pop-up and line out.

St. Rose will play Colts Neck in the semifinals of the Jarmusz Bracket, which is scheduled for Saturday.

Jayden Prokopenko broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning and after adding two more runs in the inning, the Braves closed out a win over the Panthers behind a one-hit shutout by senior left-hander Brady Costello.

Rob DiStefano led off the top of the seventh with a double and scored on Prokopenko’s one-out, go-ahead double. No. 6 Point Beach 4, Jackson 2

Antonio Acevedo clubbed a two-run double in the top of the third inning and made sure that remained the difference in the game by pitching the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings of a Garnet Gulls win over the Jaguars.

Tommy Conroy worked three innings in 42 pitches and both winning pitcher Bennett Moberg and Acevedo combined to get their work in with under 25 pitches apiece, making both eligible for Tuesday’s Ocean County Tournament quarterfinal vs. Southern. With Monday’s win by Point Beach, Thursday’s game between Wall and Point Beach in Point Pleasant will be for the outright Class A South championship game.

S.J. Wall singled home a run and Charlie Buchinsky delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Point Beach lead in half, but Moberg and Acevedo combined on four innings of scoreless relief.
