Class A North

No. 1 CBA 6, Manalapan 5

Finnbar Dufficy hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning and Declan Doogan wiggled out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the top of the sixth to deliver the Colts a win over the Braves in CBA’s first in-state game of the season, as well its first game at the new on-campus baseball complex.

Manalapan jumped on CBA starter Dylan Iwanyk for three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by RBI doubles by both James Vitucci and Rob DiStefano. Iwanyk settled in and put up zeroes in each of the next five frames, which was enough to earn the win thanks to Dufficy’s big swing.

Before his home run, Dufficy got the Colts on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, which scored Iwanyk after he started the rally with a single. In the fourth, Iwanyk again started the rally with a single, followed by a double by Michael Knox to put two runners on for Dufficy. The junior launched a fly ball beyond the centerfield fence for a three-run homer that put CBA ahead, 4-3.

CBA added two critical runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by both Ryan Wetmore and Knox to push the lead to 6-3. In the top of the sixth, Rich Cammarata roped an RBI double to make it 6-4 and Manalapan loaded the bases with none out, prompting CBA coach Marty Kenney Jr. to bring in Doogan in relief of freshman Raymond Fuchs. Manalapan pulled to within 6-5 on a passed ball, but Doogan responded with three straight strikeouts that preserved the lead.

Class B North

No. 8 Colts Neck 13, Raritan 4

Ryan Spencer retired the first 12 batters he faced on the mound and fellow seniors Dan Annunziata and R.J. Conover each hit run-scoring triples during a seven-run fourth inning that sparked the Cougars to a win over the Rockets.

Annunziata’s bases-clearing triple made it 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth and Jack Dugo followed with an RBI single to score him and make it 5-0. Conover piled on two more runs with a two-run triple and Joe Pignatelli capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to plate Conover.

Spencer breezed through the first four innings on 44 pitches while facing the minimum 12 batters. After a long bottom-of-the-fourth inning, Spencer walked the first batter of the fifth on the way to walking the bases loaded. Still, he was one pitch from escaping the jam with the no-hitter and shutout intact, but Marko Brown dunked a single into leftfield on a 3-2 pitch from Spencer to pull Raritan within 8-2. Spencer was close to picking off the runner at first just before the 3-2 offering to Brown, but the field umpire — positioned behind the pitcher’s mound with the bases loaded — did not have a clear view of both the tag and the base and ruled the runner safe.

Ryan Rude broke open the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the third and later blasted a solo home run that made it 9-4 and kick-started a five-run sixth inning for Colts Neck. Conover and fellow senior Aiden Bain each delivered an RBI double in the sixth and Annunziata capped his big game with an RBI single that gave him four driven in on the day.

No. 6 Rumson-Fair Haven 5, Freehold Twp. 4

Casper Billington clubbed a solo home run in the first inning and Lloyd Bush and Luke Gallagher each cashed in two-run singles in the fourth inning to provide the offense as the Bulldogs held on to top the Patriots.

John Kokotis singled home a run during a two-run fourth inning for Freehold Township and the Patriots knocked two more runs off their deficit in the fifth, with Bradley Santoro coming through for an RBI single that cut Rumson’s lead to 5-4.

Kobe Dancel’s second hit followed by his second stolen base of the game set up Freehold Township with runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Brady Dill stranded the go-ahead runs in scoring position by recording a strikeout and a ground out to shortstop Miles Martin to end the threat. Dill then worked around a one-out error in the seventh to close out the win for Rumson.

Marlboro 8, Red Bank 7

Chris Joy came through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Mustangs walked off with a win to survive a late-game comeback by the previously-unbeaten Bucs.

Red Bank scored six runs over the final three innings to take a 7-6 lead after falling behind, 5-1, through two innings. Jake Senkeleski gave the Bucs a 7-6 lead with a two-run single in the top of the seventh, which put the pressure on Marlboro in the bottom of the inning.

Jack Forsyth retired the first two batters of the Marlboro seventh but hit Ryan Luchi with a 3-0 pitch to start the winning rally. Chris Scaff followed with a double to park the winning runs in scoring position and Ethan Huang worked a walk to load the bases. Luchi tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch and on a 3-2 count, Joy yanked a single into left field to plate Scaff with the winning run.

Anthony Palmieri had the only RBI hit of Marlboro’s four-run first inning — an RBI single that made it 4-1 after the Mustangs scored two runs on a throwing error, then added a third on a first-and-third double-steal. Mark Risi singled home a run in the second to extend the Marlboro lead to 5-1. After Chris Doody got a run back for Red Bank with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, Luchi took it back with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

Joe Henry doubled home a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and Chris Doody followed one batter later with an RBI single that pulled Red Bank to within 6-5.

Manasquan 5, Shore 2

Shore rallied to tie the game against Manasquan ace Chase Kaplan in the bottom of the sixth, but Kaplan hit back with a go-ahead RBI single in a three-run Manasquan seventh that gave the Warriors a hard-fought win over the Blue Devils.

Andrew Barham broke up Kaplan’s shutout bid with an two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that sliced Manasquan’s lead to 2-1. Tate Toole then took over on the mound with Kaplan at 100 pitches and Braden Calandriello greeted him with a single that extended the inning, followed by an RBI single by Trevor Doremus that tied the game.

After a one-out walk and a sacrifice bunt to set up a Manasquan rally in the top of the seventh, Matt Antonucci beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners with two out. Kaplan then dropped in a single to rightfield to plate Jake Looney with the go-ahead run. Errors on back-to-back batters scored two more runs for Manasquan and Kellan Quinn pitched around a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a single to earn the save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Howell 8, Middletown North 1

John Bertan took a shutout into the seventh inning and Kurtis Lovgren needed only one pitch to record the final two outs and finish off a combined two-hitter in a win for the Rebels over the Lions.

Jake Liotti, Antonio Magistrelli and Waylon Cavanaugh each delivered an RBI hit during a six-run third inning for Howell, which staked the Rebels to a 6-0 lead. After the first two runs scored on a wild pitch and a ground out by Ryan Todisco, Liotti made it 3-0 with an RBI single. Magistrelli hammered an RBI double to right-centerfield for a 4-0 lead, the fifth run scored on an error and Cavanaugh capped the third-inning scoring with an RBI single.

Cavanaugh added a second RBI single in the top of the seventh, as did Alex Bondarew. Lovgren took over for Bertan with a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the seventh and induced a game-ending double-play ground ball to third baseman Derek Liotti, who started the around-the-horn double-play that sealed the win.
