NJSIAA Tournament

State Semifinals

Group III

Brick Memorial 2, Delsea 1

With his team down to its final strike, Tyler Garbooshian tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and fellow senior Brody Moore won it two pitches later with an RBI single through the right side, sending the Mustangs past the Crusaders and into the Group III championship game in thrilling, come-from-behind fashion.

Delsea left-handed ace Kyle Harrison silenced the Brick Memorial bats for the first six innings and started the bottom of the seventh with a strikeout against the first batter. Junior Will Montanye started the rally with a single through the middle, but Harrison bounced back by inducing a pop-out from Gavin McCue, who had doubled in each of his first two at-bats.

Garbooshian stepped to the plate having reached based safely in each of his last seven plate appearances, including a hustle double in the bottom of the first inning, followed by a pair of walks on Monday. On a 1-1 pitch, Garbooshian took strike two, but Montanye stole second base, giving Brick Memorial’s hottest hitter a chance to tie the game with a single. Garbooshian hit a hard ground ball to the left side and off the glove of diving Delsea shortstop Ryan Looby. The ball kicked far enough away from Looby to allow Montanye to sprint home standing up with the tying run.

Garbooshian then stole second on the first pitch of Moore’s at-bat and on the very next pitch, Moore smacked a ground ball through the right side, chasing Garbooshian home with the winning run.

In the top of the seventh, McCue and third baseman Matt McGlynn kept the deficit at 1-0 when McGlynn started a relay that cut a run down at the plate. Ethan DuBois singled into leftfield and after a double-clutch, McCue made an accurate throw into McGlynn, who fired to his older brother, Joe McGlynn, at home plate to drop the tag on pinch-runner Owen Dreissek.

McCue hit doubles in both the third and fifth innings and Garbooshian led off the bottom of the first with a double, but Brick Memorial could not capitalize on any of those chances vs. Harrison. Garbooshian moved to third on an errant pick-off throw to second with one out and still did not score after Harrison recorded three straight outs.

Delsea grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an unearned run vs. Zach Pirnik, who pitched a complete game for his ninth win of the season despite battling strep throat. With two out and a runner on second via an error, Crusaders centerfielder Milo Gebhard lined a single to left-center to score Jake Loguidice from second base.

Brick Memorial will play Old Tappan at 10 a.m. Sunday at Rutgers University for the Group III championship.

Group I

Point Beach 15, Woodstown 6

Freshman Mason Sesny hit a go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the second inning and a momentum-shifting two-run single during a seven-run fifth inning that helped the Garnet Gulls pull away from the Wolverines and earn a spot in the Group I championship game Sunday at Rutgers University.

Junior Carson Pfeifer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in Point Beach’s three-run first inning and capped the seven-run fifth with a grand slam that opened up a 14-6 lead. Senior Dan Lubach opened the scoring with an RBI ground-rule double and junior Brody Powers followed with an RBI single before Pfeifer’s sac fly made it 3-0.

Woodstown went off for four runs in the top of the second inning before the Garnet Gulls responded in the bottom. After Sesny roped his go-ahead two-run double, Powers followed an intentional walk to Lubach with an RBI double to rightfield for a 6-4 lead.

Point Beach added a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI infield single by sophomore Davin Marquez after the Garnet Gulls set up runners on the corners with singles by Antonio Acevedo and Dylan Ryan. Woodstown then put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Drew Sutton, followed by a throwing error that scored the second run to cut Point Beach’s lead to 7-6.

With a runner on third and none out, Tommy Conroy notched a strikeout for the first out. Point Beach then blew up a suicide squeeze attempt, with Lubach tagging out Sutton after the missed bunt attempt left him out to dry. Conroy got out of the inning with another strikeout, preserving the 7-6 lead.

Sesny poked a two-run single into shallow left to make it 9-6 and Powers knocked in another run with a bases-loaded single that moved every runner up one base. Pfeifer then launched his home run to left-centerfield to blow the game open.

Point Beach will face Pompton Lakes Sunday at 4 p.m. in a rematch of the 2024 Group I final, which Pompton Lakes won, 14-4.
