No. 2 Brick Memorial 12, DePaul 9 (8 Innings)

Trevor Kish hit a tie-breaking, opposite-field, three-run home run with two out in the top of the eighth inning and the Mustangs handed the Spartans — ranked No. 4 in the state by NJ Advance Media — their first loss of the season by winning a wild, back-and-forth game in extra innings.

Kish’s three-run shot was Brick Memorial’s third home run of the game, all of which were sent over the short, high fence in right field at DePaul Catholic’s on-campus field. Dan Golembiewski launched a grand slam in the top of the fourth to give Brick Memorial an 8-3 lead after DePaul brought in Stetson commit Chris Morano to face the Mustangs slugging first baseman.

After DePaul pulled within 8-6 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Brody Moore skied a solo home run over the rightfield wall to extend the Mustangs lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. DePaul came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a two-run home run to right by J.C. Pacheco — the second home run of the game by the Arizona State commit. Aiden Ogando then singled through the middle, stole second base, took third on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Frank Morano.

After giving up the lead in the bottom of the sixth, Brick Memorial reliever Michael Figner pitched a scoreless seventh to give his team a chance to win the game in the eighth. Tyler Garbooshian started the inning with a single, but was thrown out attempting to stretch it to a double. Golembiewski followed with a single through the middle and made it to second with two out on a ground out to shortstop by Moore.

After Joe McGlynn worked a walk, Kish jumped ahead in the count, 2-0, and after fouling off the 2-0 pitch from Jason Amalbert, he drove a fly ball to rightfield that cleared the fence and scored three for a 12-9 Brick Memorial lead.

Making just the second relief pitching appearance of his first varsity season, sophomore Jack Moriarty pitched a scoreless eighth inning around a one-out walk to Pacheco to earn his first career save.

Caldwell 4, No. 6 Rumson-Fair Haven 3

Brady Williams pitched himself and Rumson within one out of a one-hit shutout, but three errors, a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh opened the door for the Chiefs to steal a win from the Bulldogs in stunning fashion.

Williams took the loss despite being credited with a complete game on one hit, which included one earned run in the fifth inning on Frank Anemone’s RBI bunt single. Caldwell set up the threat in the fifth thanks to the first two of Williams’s three hit batters, two of which came around to score. Prior to the fifth, Williams set down the first 12 Caldwell hitters in order.

Rumson’s first two runs came courtesy of Caldwell miscues, first a two-out balk in the second and then a two-out error in the top of the fifth to make it 2-0. Rumson tacked on a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by D.J. Ylagan to score Lloyd Bush, who doubled to lead off the inning and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Miles Martin.

A two-out error kept Caldwell alive in the bottom of the seventh and Williams then hit the next batter. Another fielding error extended the game and a throwing error on the same play allowed two runs to score and for Anemone to reach third on the throw-away with two out. The first pitch after Caldwell tied the game was a wild pitch, allowing Anemone to score the winning run and extend Caldwell’s perfect start to 6-0 while halting Rumson’s season-opening winning streak at five.
