Monmouth County Tournament

Opening Round

(9) Ranney 8, (8) Middletown South 3

Brody Garguilo slammed a two-run home run in the fourth and Brody McCorkle capped his three-RBI game with a two-run single in the sixth in support of Justin Kauffman, who pitched the Panthers past the Eagles in the third meeting between the teams this season.

Ricky Lopez jump-started each of Ranney’s first two scoring rallies by leading off both innings with a single and stealing second base each time. In the top of the first, McCorckle brought Lopez home with a sacrifice fly and in the third, Jake Abrams drove him in with a two-out RBI single to put the Panthers ahead, 2-0.

Garguilo’s homer made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth and McCorkle extended the lead to 6-0 with his two-run single in the sixth. Two more Ranney runs scored in the sixth on a wild pitch and Kauffman shook off a three-run Middletown South sixth to finish the complete game.

Ryan Cerminaro and Middletown South starter Peter DeNicola got the Eagles on the board with back-to-back two-out doubles in the sixth, with Cerminaro driving in one and DeNicola plating two.

Ranney will play at top-seeded CBA in the Monmouth County Tournament quarterfinals, tentatively scheduled for next Saturday, April 25.

(6) Howell 5, (11) St. John Vianney 4 (9 Innings)

Ryan Todisco knocked in the winning run with a one-out, RBI single into centerfield in the bottom of the ninth and the Rebels walked off with a round-one win over the Lancers after rallying for two runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Conner Halvorsen led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and stole second base to reach scoring position. Matt Vetrano lined out to centerfield for the first out of the inning before Todisco stepped in and punched a 1-2 pitch from Matt Baczor through the middle to score Halvorsen with the winning run.

Connor Acker sparked the tying rally in the seventh with a leadoff double, then moved to third on an error on a ground ball hit by Waylon Cavanaugh. Baczor, who was seeking his Shore-leading fifth save, recorded the first out on a lineout, then Acker scored on a ground out by Matt Vetrano, which drew Baczor one out closer to finishing off the save.

SJV opted to walk Todisco to put runners on first and third and Cavanaugh scored the tying run on a wild pitch. After one more intentional walk, Baczor struck out the final batter of the seventh.

Tyler Shpiro hit an RBI single in the top of the first and SJV took a 2-0 lead before Jake Liotti cut Howell’s deficit in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Derek Liotti pulled Howell within 3-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Class B North

No. 5 Rumson-Fair Haven 4, No. 7 Colts Neck 2

Jack Gyimesi hit a game-tying RBI single with two out in the bottom of the sixth and Lloyd Bush followed with a go-ahead two-run single as the Bulldogs came through in the late innings to complete a regular-season sweep of the Cougars.

Colts Neck took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run to right-centerfield by Ronan Kiely on the first pitch of the top of the sixth inning. Rumson starter Brady Williams had allowed just one hit — on an infield single — over the first five innings before Kiely took him out of the yard, then bounced back to finish the sixth with his team still down, 2-1.

Williams started the winning rally with a one-out single and gave way to courtesy runner Evan Sophinos. Dan McElduf then hit a hard ground ball to the right side that Colts Neck failed to turn into an out, putting runners on first and second after the error. Cougars starter Ryan Rude induced a pop out for the second out but the error came back to bite Colts Neck when Gyimesi ripped a single to center to chase home Sophinos with the tying run.

Bush then poked a soft fly ball into centerfield off the end of the bat and Colts Neck centerfielder R.J. Conover could not come up with it on his diving attempt. With both base-runners moving on contact, McElduf scored from second and Gyimesi motored all the way home from first to make it 4-2.

Max Hinchliff pitched a one-two-three seventh to nail down the save.

Monmouth 5, Middletown North 1

After missing the first three weeks of the season with a knee injury, Vaughn Bociulis made his first start of the season and piled up 10 strikeouts in a three-hit complete game that carried the Falcons past the Lions for their first division win.

Monmouth did all of its scoring in the third and fourth innings and all five runs against Middletown North freshman Evan Mazzolla were unearned. Beckett Langdon doubled and scored the go-ahead run on a ground out in the third and his ground ball in the fourth led to an error and two more runs for a 5-1 lead. Aiden Perez had Monmouth’s lone run-scoring hit — an RBI single in the fourth to make it 3-1.

Liam Sheehan opened the scoring for Middletown North with a two-out RBI single in the top of the third.

Donovan Catholic 3, Central 2

Colin Johnson capped a three-run seventh with a game-winning two-run double down the rightfield line and the Griffins walked off with a win over the Golden Eagles to end a five-game losing streak.

Central junior Vinny Trematerra took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning, at which point the Donovan Catholic offense came to life. Jake Duncan led off with a single and Steve Malato followed with a double to put runners on second and third. After Henry Rezai was hit by a pitch, Luca Affa hit into a fielder’s choice, with Duncan beating the throw home. Johnson then served his double into rightfield to score the winning runs.

Tommy Lavorgna staked Central to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first

Liam Buchan hit a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to score A.J. Aversano with the winning run and the Huskies walked off with an extra-inning win over the Mustangs, snapping Marlboro’s six-game winning streak.

Aversano led off the eighth with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Marlboro elected to walk Lorenzo Michaud and after a strikeout by Mustangs sophomore Ethan Mecchi, Buchan delivered the winning hit to chase Aversano home from second.

Michaud hit a two-out, game-tying, RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to score starting pitcher Liam Corbett, who singled with one out.

Chris Joy led Marlboro out to a 3-0 lead, with Joy tripling and scoring in the first and singling home a run in the bottom of the second. Matawan got two runs back in the bottom of the second on a first-and-third double-steal, followed by an RBI bunt single by Nick Bucco. Tyler Baptiste also reached on a bunt single and stole two bases in the inning.

Class D North

Long Branch 16, Lakewood 14

After falling behind, 10-2, Lakewood placed the tying runs on second and third base with none out in the seventh, but Leonardo Arcos pitched out of the jam to nail down the win over the Piners for the Green Wave.

Arcos took over on the mound with his team leading, 16-12, and the bases loaded, none out in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Herrera greeted him with a two-run single and advanced to second on the throw to set up Lakewood with a chance to tie the game. Arcos bounced back by striking out the next two batters and after walking the potential go-ahead run with two out to load the bases, he induced a game-ending pop-out.

Arcos also hit an RBI double in Long Branch’s five-run third inning, with Jason DeNoia, Justin Cuevas and starting pitching Kellen Campbell each singling home a run during the rally as well. Justin Cuevas hit an RBI triple in the second inning as part of his five-RBI game.

Jackson 10, Livingston 4

Carney O’Donnell belted a two-run home run to kick off a four-run first inning and Shane McIntyre drove in three as the Jaguars rode their early offense to a win over the Lancers.

Sean Hallihan and Matt Galayda each added a run-scoring hit in the first, with Galayda splitting the gap for an RBI double after Hallihan made it 3-0 with an RBI single. McIntyre and Angel Cruz both delivered RBI singles — McIntyre in the third and Cruz in the fourth — and McIntyre later gave his team some breathing room with a two-run double in the top of the seventh.
