Non-Division

Lacey 3, Central 0

Sophomore Evan Greenberg and junior Joe Geiger interrupted a pitcher’s duel with back-t0-back RBI hits in the bottom of the third inning to account for all the scoring, as the Lions hung a crooked number on otherwise sharp Central ace Tyler Woermer to pick up their second win of the season by beating the rival Golden Eagles.

Woermer faced the minimum through the first seven batters of the game before walking and hitting a batter with one out in the bottom of the third. Greenberg made him pay with a two-out, two-run double into shallow left-center that was aided by the elements. Geiger followed with a single into left that brought home Greenberg for a 3-0 lead.

Geiger’s single was the last hit of the day for Lacey and that was enough for junior Dalton Johnson and sophomore Jayden McNeil. Johnson struck out a career-high 12 in just five innings before McNeil finished off the combined two-hit shutout.

Millburn 13, Freehold Boro 3 (5 Innings)

The Colonials ambushed the Millers with three runs in the top of the first inning and led going into the bottom of the third, but Millburn exploded with two five-run innings to pick up the win in the season-opener for both teams.

Senior Nick Lynch singled, stole second and scored on a passed ball to kick off the scoring before senior Erol Bayrasli singled home a run and junior Thomas Montegna delivered a sacrifice fly to five Freehold a 3-0 lead.

Millburn scored in the bottom of the second for the first of seven unearned runs against Freehold starter Anthony Virzi, who struck out seven and walked one in 3 1/3 but was victimized by five errors behind him. Jonah Toubes tied the game with a two-run single in the third, immediately followed by a two-run double by Holden Cohn to make it 5-3, Millburn.

Asher Holland singled home a run in the Millburn fourth and ended the game with an inside-the-park grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.
