Class C North

Shore 4, Marlboro 0

The Blue Devils scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and turned a game-ending triple-play that finished off the team’s sixth shutout during a seven-game winning streak and clinching the Blue Devils a share of their first division championship in 20 years.

Liam Hennelly pitched a three-hitter for Shore and was the first Blue Devil to touch the ball on the wild play that ended the game. With runners on first and second and none out, Hennelly got his glove on a line drive, but could not squeeze it. The runners continued toward the next base, but the ball hung up and was caught in the air for the first out by shortstop Andrew Barham, who stepped on second base for the second out, then threw to first base for the final out, with Ryan Barham making the scoop out of the dirt to end the game.

Catcher Riley Smaltini delivered the big blow in the seventh with a two-run double. Shore can clinch the outright division championship with a Freehold Boro win over St. John Vianney on Friday or with a win over Freehold Boro on May 11.

Non-Division

No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven 8, No. 8 Howell 3

Rumson mounted a five-run rally with two out in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and the Bulldogs held on to beat the Rebels in a regular-season match-up between two of the four semifinalists in the Monmouth County Tournament.

Howell left-hander Kurtis Lovgren retired the first two batters of the bottom of the sixth, then surrendered back-to-back two-out singles to Jack Gyimesi and Lloyd Bush, with Bush advancing to second on a bobbled ball in the outfield.

Lovgren was lifted for fellow left-hander Gavin Kauffman, who just missed the upper boundary of the strike zone on three straight curveballs to pinch-hitter Aiden Dill, who drew a six-pitch walk to load the bases.

Alex Calabretta stepped in as a second straight Rumson pinch-hitter and hit a firm ground ball toward second base that resulted in compounding errors, first to allowed the first run to score and then a throwing error that allowed Bush to race home for a 5-3 Rumson lead.

A wild pitch scored Dill and advanced Calabretta to third on another throwing error, which Miles Martin followed with a shallow double down the leftfield line for a 7-3 lead. D.J. Ylagan capped the rally with a line-drive single to center.

Brady Dill allowed one unearned run over 4 1/3 innings in his first career start, but settled for a no-decision after Howell rallied against the Rumson bullpen. Catcher Jake Liotti came up about a foot short of a game-tying home run on a double that clanged off the leftfield fence with two out. Alex Bondarew finished the job with a ground-rule double to left that plated the tying runs, knotting the score, 3-3.

Max Hinchliffe earned the win in relief after surrendering the lead, with Hunter Beattie closing out the victory on an eight-pitch seventh inning. All three Rumson pitchers — Dill (46), Hinchliffe (33) and Beattie (eight) — maintained pitch-counts low enough to keep them eligible to pitch in Saturday’s Monmouth County Tournament semifinal should any of them be needed.

Gyimesi gave Rumson a 3-1 lead with a tie-breaking two-run home run to left-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth-inning. One batter earlier, Dan McElduf tied the game on a sacrifice fly after Casper Billington doubled and Brady Williams singled to start the rally.

Howell opened the scoring in the top of the third on a two-out RBI double by Connor Halvorsen, which was set up by a passed ball that moved Derek Liotti into scoring position after he led off the inning with a single.
