Sectional Quarterfinals

South Jersey Non-Public A

(3) Red Bank Catholic 4, (6) St. John Vianney 1

Shortstop Drew Cannon and centerfielder Luke Lonczak each went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and senior right-hander Glen Popes turned in a complete-game effort on the mound as the Caseys snapped a four-game losing streak by clawing past the Lancers and into the sectional quarterfinals Tuesday at No. 2 St. Augustine.

Cannon opened the scoring by scorching an RBI double into the leftfield corner in the bottom of the third inning. In the fifth, RBC loaded the bases against St. John Vianney left-handed starter Dylan Blackman, who was lifted for right-hander Thomas Dunn with one out. RBC first baseman Tyler Hager gave the Caseys a 2-1 lead with a hard ground ball to second base that Mike Capaldo bobbled before collecting it and throwing Hager out at first base as the go-ahead run scored.

RBC added on in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles by Miles Nessan and Lonczak.

(4) Ranney 13, (5) St. Rose 0 (5 Innings)

Jake Abrams tossed four shutout innings with three hits and no walks and combined with Ricky Lopez to lead a relentless offensive attack that carried the Panthers to a one-sided win over the Purple Roses. Ranney advances to the sectional semifinals Tuesday against the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between No. 1 Gloucester Catholic and No. 8 Princeton Day.

Lopez went 4-for-4 with a two-run single in the second and a bases-clearing double in the fourth to compile five RBI. He singled and scored the game’s first run on another single through the left side by freshman Brody McCorkle in the bottom of the first, then punched a two-run single to right field to plate two runs with two out in the bottom of the second, making the score 3-0.

Abrams delivered two-out, two-strike, two-run single in the bottom of the third for his second hit of the game and a wild pitch later in the inning allowed the sixth Ranney run to score.

Lopez capped a seven-run fourth with a double to the base of the left-centerfield fence that scored three more runs with two out in the inning. Eleven of Ranney’s 13 runs in the game crossed the plate with two out in the inning.

(12) Raritan 2, (5) Delran 0

Senior left-hander and Boston College commit Will Meehan pitched a no-hitter with one walk and 16 strikeouts to lead the Rockets to a round-one win on the road over the Bears. Raritan advances to the sectional quarterfinals Friday at No. 4 Wall.

Meehan took a perfect game into the sixth inning and lost that bid on an error leading off the top of the inning. After a pair of strikeouts, the Rockets ace then issued his first walk with two out to put the tying runs aboard, but bounced back with his third strikeout of the inning. Meehan then close out the game with a pair of strikeouts and induced a ground out to shortstop Bear Evernham for the final out.

It took Meehan 95 pitches to no-hit Delran and 70 of them were strikes. Through five innings, Meehan sat at only 58 pitches before Delran made him throw 37 over the final two to finish off the no-hitter.

Raritan put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the third, which started with a leadoff double by Dylan Hernandez. After a sacrifice bunt by Eric Finne and a strikeout, Antonio Lamberti came through with a line drive into leftfield for an RBI single to score Hernandez.

Eric McCartney added to the lead with a solo home run leading off the top of the seventh inning.

South Jersey Group III

(7) Mainland 7, (10) Lacey 0

(3) Toms River East 6, (14) Hammonton 3

Jayce Cappello delivered two-run singles in both the fourth and sixth innings and Logan Macchia pitched five one-hit innings of relief to help the Raiders rebound from a three-spot by the Blue Devils in the top of the first by advancing to the sectional quarterfinals Friday vs. No. 6 Shawnee.

Cappello drew a walk and scored the first Toms River East run on the back end of a first-and-third stolen base attempt, which was successful on the part of Lucas Melton stealing second base. Chase Caswell then knocked in Melton with an RBI ground out to pull Toms River East within 3-2.

Trevor West settled in on the mound for Hammonton and retired the first two batters of the bottom of the fourth before the Raiders rallied. West hit catcher Dominik Sabatino with a pitch, Jonathan Pallman singled and Joey DiMeo walked to load the bases for Cappello, who came through with a single into centerfield to plate both Sabatino and Pallman.

Pallman bunted for a hit in the sixth and held at third on a double by DiMeo before Cappello drove them both in with his second two-run single to centerfield.

Macchia took over mid-batter with a runner already on in the top of the third and went on to walk that batter, as well as the next one to load the bases. He then induced a pop-up on the infield for the first out, got the second out at the plate on a ground ball to third base that Michael Mendes threw to Sabatino for the force, then ended the inning to a fly out to Caswell in left.

After surrendering a one-out single in the top of the fourth, Macchia retired the last 11 batters he faced to close out the victory.
