Quarterfinals

(4) Brick Memorial 7, (5) Lacey 4

Tyler Garbooshian, Michael Figner and Dan Golembiewski each hit a run-scoring double as the Mustangs scored in each half-inning following a scoreless first to back winning pitcher Zach Pirnik in a quarterfinal win over the Lions.

Brick Memorial grabbed a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Braden Kabus in the bottom of the second inning and Garbooshian extended it to 2-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.

A wild pitch allowed a third Mustangs run to score and Figner knocked in two runs with a double in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1. Golembiewski slammed an RBI double to push the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth and Brody Moore capped the scoring with a two-out RBI single later in the sixth.

Logan Resetar went 3-for-3 with a walk at the plate, including a double in the top of the sixth that set him up to score on an RBI by Dalton Johnson, who also singled home a run in the top of the seventh to cut Brick Memorial’s lead to 7-4 with two out and bring the tying run to the plate.

Will Montanye ended the game by notching a strikeout with the bases loaded, sending the Mustangs to Saturday’s OCT semifinal at top-seeded Toms River East for a rematch of last year’s championship game.

(11) Southern 3, (3) Point Beach 2 (10 Innings)

Conner Kerlin yanked an RBI single through the left side to score Dawson Howarth from second with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Owen Hughes capped five innings of scoreless relief with a bases-loaded strikeout to end the game as the Rams knocked off the Garnet Gulls to advance to the OCT semifinals as a double-digit seed for the second straight year.

Howarth was hit by the first pitch of the 10th inning and Harrison Grose sacrificed him to second base with a bunt back to the mound. Antonio Acevedo picked up a crucial strikeout for the second out of the inning before Kerlin pulled through the left side of the infield and into left to chase home Howarth with the tie-breaking run.

Tommy Conroy led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk and Hughes responded with a strikeout for the first out. Conroy stole second base, which prompted Southern to intentionally walk Dan Lubach, even as the potential winning run. Hart fielded a ground ball by Brody Powers and threw to first for the second out of the inning as both Conroy and Lubach advanced to put the winning runs in scoring position with two out and Southern again issued an intentional walk, this time to Pfeifer.

The strategy paid off when Hughes struck out Acevedo looking on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

Southern struck first on back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Grose and catcher Elias Gonzales in the top of the third inning. Point Beach tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Pfeifer.

Point Beach turned double-plays to get out of both the sixth and seventh innings unscathed, but the Garnet Gulls stranded runners in scoring position against Hughes in four of his five innings of work.

(1) Toms River East 5, (8) Toms River North 2

Jayce Cappello and Chase Caswell each hit an RBI double during the first three innings and the Raiders rode a combined two-hitter from Liam Scallon and Jonathan Pallman to a win over the Mariners.

Toms River East continues its quest for a third straight OCT championship Saturday against fourth-seeded Brick Memorial in a rematch of last year’s OCT championship game.

The Raiders scratched across a run in the bottom of the first thanks to a single and a pair of stolen bases by Joey DiMeo, who scored from third on a ground out by Lucas Melton. Michael Mendes singled home the second Toms River East run in the second inning and Cappello made it 3-0 with an RBI double with two out in the second.

Toms River North pulled within 3-2 on a two-run single by Vinny Vergona in the top of the third, but Toms River East answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Caswell slammed his RBI double to make it 4-0 and scored on a passed ball to cap the scoring.

(2) Toms River South 6, (7) Point Boro 5

Brett Rankin tied the game with a two-out RBI single that also scored a run from first on an error and Canaan Sanzone drove Rankin in as the tie-breaking run with a RBI single and the Indians held on to win a back-and-forth battle against Class B South foe Point Boro.

Third baseman Anthony Abatemarco preserved the lead in the top of the sixth by gloving a ground ball with runners on second and third and firing to the plate for a tag out that kept Point Boro off the board. Christian Mascaro wiggled out of the inning and pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Toms River South bounced back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1, first with an RBI single by Evan Schmidt to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. The Indians flipped the game in the bottom of the fourth with Sanzone tying the game on a sacrifice fly and Logan Weed giving his team a 3-2 lead with a two-out RBI single.

Point Boro surged to a 5-3 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Jake Clayton beat out an RBI infield single to tie the game and the Panthers took a 5-3 lead on a two-run single by Ryan Kowalewski.

Clayton singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Matt Lokerson to stake Point Boro to a 1-0 lead and Lokerson scored on a two-out RBI double by Mike Metcalfe in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1.

Toms River South will host Southern in the OCT semifinal on Saturday.

Class C North

Shore 6, Marlboro 0

Senior left-hander Ryan Barham threw his second no-hitter of the season, this time going a full seven innings with a career-high 14 strikeouts to pitch the Blue Devils past the Mustangs for their eighth win in the last nine games.

Five Marlboro batters reached base Tuesday vs. Barham: three on infield errors by Shore, one via Barham’s lone walk and another on a wild pitch on a strike three. Barham registered his 100th career strikeout in the second inning, during which he struck out four batters in the inning thanks to the one reaching on a wild pitch.

Barham threw a six-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Matawan on April 14.

Catcher Riley Smaltini broke open the scoring with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Trevor Doremus capped a three-run fourth with an RBI single as Shore capitalized on three Marlboro errors in the inning.

Liam Hennelly shot an RBI single through the right side to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fifth and Mike Russomano clocked a two-run double off the glove of a diving centerfield Chris Scaff, who nearly made a spectacular play. Instead, the ball rolled to the temporary fence in left-centerfield as two runs scored to push the Blue Devils lead to 6-0.

Barham took the mound in the top of the seventh with 93 pitches and retired the first batter on one pitch. With two out, pinch-hitter Ryan Luchi fouled off three two-strike pitches but Barham got one by him for his 14th strikeout to cap the no-hitter.
