Class A North

Howell 9, No. 3 Ranney 5

Connor Halvorsen cranked a solo home run to spark a four-run first by Howell and Jackson Vetrano pitched his way to a second win in as many games as the Rebels upended the Panthers while running their two-game run total to 27.

Ryan Todisco wrapped an RBI double in the first and both Jake Liotti and Antonio Magistrelli each added an RBI single in Howell’s four-run first, which was the first of three straight innings with the Rebels scoring at least two runs.  They added two in the second on a wild pitch and an error, then went up, 8-0, in the third on an RBI double by Connor Acker and a passed ball. Matt Vetrano capped a 3-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI double to make it 9-2 in the fifth.

Ricky Lopez led the Shore Conference in home runs in 2025 with 11 and opened his season with two home runs and five RBI to carry the Ranney offense. The two homers already eclipsed his road home run total from 2025, when he hit just one of his 11 homers away from Ranney’s home field.

Acevedo’s three-run double opened the scoring in the top of the first, which ended with a grand slam by Brody Powers — the second homer in as many days by the junior leftfielder.

Red Bank 8, Shore 4

Casey Lillis put Red Bank on top with a first-inning, RBI double, Sean Keatts scattered eight hits over five strong innings and the Bucs broke out with a five-run fourth inning to secure a season-opening win over the Blue Devils.

Shore starter Ryan Barham gave himself a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the top of the first but Red Bank struck back for two runs, first on an RBI ground out by Chris Doody, followed by Lillis’s go-ahead double.

Joe Henry extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the second and plated the first run of the fourth with an RBI ground out to make it 4-2. Doody followed with a two-run double for a 6-2 lead and Matt Huss extended it to 7-2 with an RBI single. Lillis capped the scoring with a ground ball RBI, which turned into an error that allowed him to reach.

Jack Monahan finished off the final two innings and overcame three Red Bank errors in the seventh — including a catcher’s interference — to close out the win.

Class D North

Keyport 4, Lakewood 2

Ryan Byrne clocked a two-run home run that proved to be the difference and recorded the final four outs on the mound to save a win for Paxton Douglass and the Red Raiders, who won their Shore Conference opener over the Piners.

Tristan Knoblauch staked Keyport to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning before Byrne extended it to 4-0 with a two-run shot to center for a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Lakewood responded with a two-run home run by Cris Rosario in the bottom of the eighth before Byrne came on to shut down the threat in the sixth and fire a scoreless seventh, which ended with a strikeout after freshman catcher Brian Cabreja threw out a runner attempting to steal second base.

Keansburg 13, Long Branch 12 (8 Innings)

Mikey Clayton tied the game with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, then capped a five-run eighth inning with a game-winning, two-out, two-run double to finish off an epic extra-inning, opening-day win for the Titans over the Green Wave.

Keansburg drew within 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch and an RBI ground out by Gavin Flanzbaum. With two out, Michael Burke extended the inning by drawing a walk to load the bases and Clayton hit a ground ball that he beat out for a game-tying infield single, which plated Flanzbaum with the tying run.

Long Branch exploded for four runs — all with two out — in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by Kellen Campbell that made it 12-8. Kendrick Baez-Oliveras gave Long Branch the lead with an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch before Campbell plated the two runs with his double. Lukas Scarantino came on to pitch and struck out the final batter of the inning to halt the rally.

In the bottom of the eighth, Keansburg loaded the bases with one out and Scarantino came through again with a line drive single to right that chased home two runs and brought the winning run to the plate. Jaidan Arenas followed with an infield single to score another run and push the tying run to scoring position.

Justin Cuevas picked up a big strikeout for the second out of the inning, but Clayton came up with another chance to tie the game with a single to the outfield. Instead, he lofted a double into right field to score both Rios and Arenas with the winning runs.

Middletown South 9, Hunterdon Central 8

Senior catcher Lucas Grigos capped a huge opening day with a two-out, game-winning, walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to deliver the Eagles a wild, season-opening win over the Red Devils.

The game-winning single was the fourth RBI of the game for Grigos, who belted a go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give Middletown South an 8-7 lead after Hunterdon Central went up 7-3 thanks to a four-run third and another run in the top of the fourth. Jack Dougherty and Mike Mullane each hit two-out, RBI singles to cut Middletown South’s deficit to 7-5, then Grigos connected on his two-out long ball to catapult the Eagles into the lead.

Tristan Ovalle tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the inning, it was Dougherty that ignited the winning rally with a one-out double. Doughery moved to third base on a ground out back to the mound and with two out, Grigos ripped a line drive into left to plate Dougherty with the winning run.

Middletown South answered a two-run first by Hunterdon Central with three in the bottom of the first, starting with a game-tying, two-run double by Ryan Cerminaro. Mike Marinich then gave the Eagles the 3-2 lead with a two-out RBI single to score Cerminaro.
