NJSIAA State Tournament

First Round

South Jersey Non-Public A

(8) Paul VI 4, (9) Donovan Catholic 1

Connor Bragg permitted only one run over the first four innings for Donovan Catholic, but the Eagles scored three runs off the Griffins bullpen in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a round one win at home. Paul VI moves on to face No. 1 Immaculata Thursday in the sectional quarterfinals.

Donovan Catholic tied the game in the top of the sixth on a throwing error that the Griffins forced by running a double-steal with runners on first and second after back-t0-back walks by Stephen Malato and Lucas Affa. Malato stole third as the lead runner and scored after the throw to third skipped into leftfield.

Kevin Martin gave Paul VI the lead back with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth, followed by an RBI double by Mason Myers.

(6) St. John Vianney 10, (11) St. Joseph Metuchen 7

Winning pitcher Tyler McDougall hit a two-run home run during a five-run fifth inning and Wyatt Lewis contributed an RBI single in the second and a solo home run in the fifth to help power the Lancers to a round-one win over the Falcons.

C.J. Simone doubled home a run after an error broke open the scoring in the bottom of the first, giving the Lancers a quick 2-0 lead. Lewis’s RBI single the following inning made it 3-0 and courtesy runner Jalen Rodriguez created the fourth run by stealing third and scoring on an overthrow to the base in the bottom of the third. Rodriguez finished with three stolen bases running for catcher Tyler Shpiro.

St. Joe’s cut its deficit in half with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Lancers responded with five in the fourth, capped by the McDougall homer to make it 9-2. The junior left-hander took over on the mound with the bases loaded and two out in the prior half-inning and got out of the inning with a 4-2 lead after one run scored on a wild pitch.

Lewis extended the SJV lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth before St. Joe’s struck back with a two-run home run by Nick Yackewych in the top of the sixth. The Falcons mounted another threat in the top of the seventh and John Boyke knocked McDougall out of the game with a two-run double that cut the deficit to 10-7. Dan Lavan walked the first batter he faced, then struck out a pinch-hitter to bring Yackewych back to the plate as the tying run with two out. Yackewych hit a ground ball to Nick Vitiello at shorstop that he scooped up and fired to first for the final out.

St. John Vianney moves on to face No. 3 Red Bank Catholic in Red Bank Thursday in the sectional quarterfinals.

(5) CBA 8, (12) Camden Catholic 1

Jayden Matejicka collected two more hits and scored the first CBA run before the Colts broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth to back junior Luke Grbic’s complete-game effort.

Matejicka singled, stole second, and scored after stealing third and watching the throw down to the base skip into leftfield. The Colts finally added to their lead in the fifth, starting with an RBI double by Alex Fiore. Tommy Lee then came through with a pinch-hit RBI single and Dylan Reynholds followed with a two-run single that extended the CBA lead to 5-0.

Michael Knox and Jack Russo added RBI singles in CBA’s three-run sixth and Grbic finished off his first seven-inning complete game by allowing an unearned run in the top of the seventh. With six scoreless frames to open the game, Gribic extended CBA’s scoreless innings streak to 18 games and the Colts will take a streak of 19 innings without an earned run into Thursday’s sectional quarterfinal at No. 4 Union Catholic.
