NJSIAA State Tournament

First Round

North Jersey 2, Group III

(9) Middletown North 5, (8) Colonia 1

Senior Louis Romeo prevented the tying run from scoring on a squeeze attempt in the bottom of the sixth, then pushed a run home with his own squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh before completing a five-out save on the mound that sent the Lions to the sectional quarterfinals with a win over the Patriots.

Middletown North laid claim to a 2-0 lead with a run each in the first and second innings. Donnie Murphy delivered an RBI double in the top of the first and freshman Jack Byers knocked in a run with a single in the second after catcher Derek Thoms led off with a single.

The Lions denied Colonia’s first scoring threat thanks to a defensive gem by leftfielder M.J. Parulis, who made a running catch over his shoulder, then fired the ball in to initiate the 7-6-3 double-play, with Romeo firing to first to double off the runner.

Romeo came on with runners on the corner and one out in a 2-1 game and pounced on a bunt back to the mound before shoveling it to Thoms for the tag at the plate and the second out of the inning. He then reached back for a strikeout to end the inning, sending the game to the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Middletown North took advantage of a pair of walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch on a strikeout that allowed Danny Sigler to score the third Middletown North run after he led off the inning with a walk. Romeo followed with his RBI squeeze bunt to plate Ryan Clark and Thomas came through with an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Colonia loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Romeo stranded all three to complete a scoreless outing, record his third save of the season and set up a trip to top-seeded Chatham on Friday.

(6) Manalapan 4, (11) Marlboro 2

James Vitucci hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third and Jagger Golden bounced back from allowing two runs in the top of the first to pitch five strong innings before Brady Costello closed out a first-round win for the Braves over the Mustangs. The win sends Manalapan to the sectional semifinals at No. 3 Hunterdon Central and also gives head coach Brian Boyce his 400th career win.

Ethan Huang slammed a two-run double to give Marlboro a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the lead was short-lived as Manalapan scored twice with two out in the bottom of the second — first on a fielder’s choice in which Marlboro failed to record an out, then on a bases-loaded walk drawn by P.J. Pape.

Vitucci’s sac fly broke the 2-2 tie in the following inning and Josh Sosinov added an insurance run with another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

Costello pitched two scoreless innings to finish off a win for Golden and Manalapan.

(8) Freehold Township 4, (9) South Brunswick 3

After South Brunswick stunned Freehold Township with three runs in the top of the seventh off Jackson Redmond, senior catcher Nick Schicchi came through with a game-winning, two-out RBI single to send the Patriots past the Vikings and into the sectional quarterfinals with a walk-off win.

Redmond finished the top of the seventh with a strikeout to strand the go-ahead run at third base, but the Patriots returned to the dugout reeling after giving up a three-run lead heading into the inning with their ace on the mound. George Burdge started the winning rally with a walk and stole second base to swing the momentum. Nick Stabile kept it going by hitting a ground ball to the right side that accounted for the first out, but also moved Burdge to third with the winning run.

South Brunswick opted to walk Skylar Garcia intentionally to bring up Schicchi, who was 7-for-11 during the Shore Conference Tournament. Schicchi again came through in the clutch by lining a single into leftfield to score Burdge from third with the winning run.

Freehold Township followed the same formula that carried them to the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament, which started with scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Patriots loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Stabile and Garcia, followed by Schicchi being hit by a pitch. Ed Gudaitis drew a bases-loaded walk to push home the first run and sophomore Kobe Dancel made it 2-0 with an RBI single. Junior Julian Polo tacked on another by putting in play an RBI fielder’s choice that scored Schicchi.

From there, Redmond showed the same form that has carried him to seven consecutive complete game, including Wednesday’s NJSIAA Tournament win. Through six innings, Redmond allowed one hit on an infield single and struck out 10 before taking the mound for the seventh inning.

Colin Perna led off with a double, then scored on an RBI single by Alex Katona that made it through the infield with the aide of an unexpected hop. Katona advanced to second on a ground out and a bloop single by Peyton Lynch put runners on the corners with one out. Ayden Antigua beat out a bunt single to plate the second run and put the go-ahead run on first, while pushing Lynch to second with the tying run. Lynch and Antigua then executed a double-steal to put two runners in scoring position and Luke Raab tied the game with an RBI ground out.

Despite the long inning, Redmond finished the game on just 89 pitches and pitched his seventh complete game without walking a batter. The three earned runs were the first earned runs he has allowed in 50 innings.

Freehold Township will travel to top-seeded Old Bridge on Friday for the sectional quarterfinals.

Brick Memorial will host No. 6 Hopewell Valley Friday in the sectional quarterfinals.

McGlynn’s solo homer gave Brick Memorial a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third and the Mustangs added to the advantage in the bottom of the fourth, which started with a lead-off home run by Michael Figner and ended with a two-run blast by Tyler Garbooshian.

Matt Goodfellow singled home a run in the top of the fifth for Brick’s lone score against Brick Memorial starter Zach Pirnik, who collected his seventh win of the season. Matt McGlynn delivered a pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the fifth and Joe McGlynn ended the game with an RBI single.

(16) Holmdel 1, (1) Rumson-Fair Haven 0

Senior Jack Vallillo led off the game with a ground-rule double, scored on a wild pitch, then proceeded to pitch a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to carry the Hornets over the top-seeded Bulldogs to reach the sectional quarterfinals as a No. 16 seed. Holmdel will travel to No. 8 Allentown on Friday.

Senior Rob Mioduszewski followed up Vallillo’s double with a single to right field to set up runners on the corners and a hit batter loaded the bases with none out. Vallillo then scored on a wild pitch before Rumson sophomore Brady Williams got out of the inning with a shallow fly out, a hit batter to reload the bases, a strikeout and a ground out to shortstop.

Williams went on to retire 14 straight batters and finished off his season with a three-hit complete game while taking the hard-luck loss.

Rumson advanced runners into scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth innings against Vallillo, but none ever reached third base. Bulldogs senior D.J. Ylagan accounted for both hits against Vallillo, the second of which was a single leading off the bottom of the sixth. Vallillo responded by striking out the third, fourth and fifth batters in the Rumson lineup in order to wipe away the threat. Vallillo that finished the game with his quickest inning. — a nine-pitch seventh that ended with Ethan Barry squeezing a fly ball to centerfield.

Barry also contributed to the win with a single in the seventh inning, as well as a diving catch coming in on a line drive by sophomore Dan McElduf for the second out of the bottom of the fourth.

Winning pitcher John Catanio crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning and pitched into the fifth inning before turning it over to Dan Hennessy for the seven out save as the Crimson Knights rolled through the Spartans and into the sectional quarterfinals.

Frank Soos opened the scoring with an RBI double and Catanio went deep for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Hayden Ansell singled home a run to get Ocean on the board in the fourth before the Crimson Knights scored twice with two out in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring balk, followed by an RBI single by Davis Harr.

Brian Stevens singled home a run to cut Wall’s lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth and Catanio issued a two-out walk to load the bases and prompt the pitching change. Hennessy induced an inning-ending ground out and worked around one base-runners in each of his final two innings to pick up his first save to go with a 7-0 record on the mound.

Mike Metcalfe launched a two-run home run in the second inning and capped a four-run third with an RBI single as part of a four-RBI game that backed winning pitcher John Loizos in a first-round Panthers rout of the Warriors. Wednesday’s win earns Point Boro a return trip Friday to No. 2 Governor Livingston, where the Panthers lost in the bottom of the seventh inning a year ago as a No. 16 seed after leading the unbeaten state champions for most of the game.

Fin Czaplinski opened the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the first and Metcalfe’s two-run shot made it 3-0 in the second. Matt Antonucci drove in the lone Manasquan run with a fielder’s choice RBI ground out in the top of the third, but Point Boro hit back with four in the bottom of the inning, which included a two-run single by Aidan Dombrowsky, a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kowalewski and Metcalfe’s RBI single.

Point Boro ended the game with four runs in the fifth, capped by a two-run single by Matt Lokerson.

After an error and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out, Trevor Lingerfield was hit by the 115th pitch from Justin Kramer, forcing home the winning run and sending the Eagles to the sectional quarterfinals at No. 1 Middlesex with a walk-off win over the Warriors.

Lingerfield also hit a game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the fifth for one of only two hits allowed by Kramer in his 6 1/3 innings of work. New Egypt took the game’s first lead in the top of the third, when Dylan Harper drew one of his three walks in the game with one out, went to third on an errant back-pick from the catcher and scored on a wild pitch.

(2) Eastern 2, (15) Toms River North 1 (9 Innings)

Carson Michalski laced a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth and Anthony Cataldo sent him home as the winning run with a two-out RBI single to centerfield that gave the Vikings a hard-fought win over the upset-minded Mariners.

Toms River North tied the game in the top of the sixth by pushing across an unearned run against Eastern starter Rich Iuliucci, who pitched a nine-inning three-hitter to earn his fifth win. The Mariners also collected two of their three hits for the game in that run-scoring rally, with Adam Inferrera hitting a one-out single, moving to second on a passed ball and scoring the tying run on a two-out RBI single by Vinny Vergona.

After the game-tying hit by Vergona, Iuliucci retired the final 10 batters that stepped to the plate against him. Jason Verderrosa touched up Iuliucci for a double with two out in the top of the first, after which Iuliucci set down the next 14 batters he faced before Inferrera singled to jump-start the Toms River North rally in the sixth.

Dominic Ostroman allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a one out error that allowed Sean Karbach to reach first, followed by a Karbach steal of second base and an RBI single by Jorden Espino. Ostroman allowed only three hits and three walks over six innings and 101 pitches while striking out six in taking the no-decision.
