Rumson-Fair Haven Football Team of the Week 1200x900

Rumson-Fair Haven is the Week 6 Jersey Mike’s Shore Conference Football Team of the Week

Shore Sports Insider is proud to partner with Jersey Mike’s this fall to present our weekly Football Team of the Week award that recognizes one school’s accomplishments during the prior week.

The Jersey Mike’s Shore Conference Football Team of the Week for Week 6 is Rumson-Fair Haven, which rallied from an early double-digit deficit to score 26 unanswered points and defeat archrival Red Bank Catholic, 26-11, clinching at least a share of the Class A North division title and improving to 6-0. Shore Sports Insider stopped by practice on Wednesday to present the Bulldogs and head coach Jeremy Schulte with a special game ball and a $500 Jersey Mike’s gift card for a team meal.

Rumson, which is ranked No. 2 in the Shore Sports Insider Top 12, made the short drive to Count Basie Field to face the previously-No. 3 Caseys with bragging rights and a division title. Red Bank Catholic jumped out to an early 11-0 lead on a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Frankie Williams to freshman wide receiver Jason Berecsky, followed by a 45-yard field goal by junior kicker Blake Caruso.

The Bulldogs bounced back with a dominant second quarter to take the lead for good. Senior quarterback Owen O’Toole hit senior wide receiver Jordan Angstreich for a 79-yard touchdown pass and junior running back Kellen Murray added touchdown runs of 3 and 8 yards to give Rumson a 19-11 halftime advantage. Murray added a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Rumson’s defense handled the rest to give the Bulldogs a huge divisional victory. It is Rumson’s first win over RBC since 2019 and just its second in the last 23 years. They ended the Caseys’ 17-game Shore Conference winning streak and became the first Shore public school to beat them since Middletown South in 2020.

Angstreich had the best game of his career with 10 receptions for 205 yards and a touchdown and is the first receiver in the Shore to go over 200 yards receiving in a game this season. Murray rushed for 182 yards on three touchdowns on 28 carries and O’Toole completed 18 of 26 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown. Rumson’s offensive and defensive lines dominated at the point of attack as the Bulldogs outgained RBC 453-174.

On defense, senior linebacker Jacob Tobias had a team-high 10 tackles along with one sack and one tackle for loss. Sophomore defensive lineman Ben Gredell and junior linebacker Toby Najenson also recorded sacks and senior defensive back Carson Memmott had a slick one-handed interception and a fumble recovery.

Rumson is now 6-0 for the first time since 2018.

The Bulldogs face another ranked team in Week 7 when they welcome No. 9 Donovan Catholic, a former American Division rival, to Borden Stadium on Friday night. Rumson is currently ranked No. 2 in United Power Ranking in the South Group 2 super section, so a win over the Griffins bould bolster their chances at grabbing the top overall seed.
