Senior Luke Cruz scored 13 of his team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter and also grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked four shots to close out a win for the Bulldogs (21-8) over the Panthers (18-12) that sends Rumson-Fair Haven to its first ever Group II championship game. Rumson will face Ramsey Saturday, 6 p.m. at Jersey Mike’s Arena on the campus of Rutgers University.
Rumson’s largest lead of the first half was 29-15 and 38-25 was its largest of the third quarter before Middle chopped its deficit down to 45-42 with 6:30 left in the fourth. From that point on, Cruz took over, scoring 13 points during a 20-10 run that turned into 26-13 to finish the game.
Senior Luke Lydon scored all 17 of his points and hit all five of his three-pointers during the first three quarter while also dishing out six assists. Junior Casey Moore added nine points, four rebounds and three assists and freshman Clint Martin contributed eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals for Rumson.
Rumson seized control of the game with a run that started at the tail-end of the first quarter and reached its apex in the second. Middle opened the game with a 12-7 lead and Rumson countered with nine straight points before a three-pointer by senior Alex Daniel cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 16-15 at the end of the first. Daniel led Middle with a game-high 26 points.
The Bulldogs then held Middle scoreless for the first 5:56 of the second without a field goal until the 1:10 mark. Rumson started the second on a 13-0 run and outscored the Panthers, 24-7, for the remainder of the half after falling behind, 12-7.
Rumson held Middle junior guard and leading scorer Mason Murawski to three points, which came on a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Second-leading scorer Chase Moore finished with just four, while 6-foot-7 junior Kanye Perkins chipped in 17 points in the loss.
