Junior Jake Sliwinski hit the game-winning free throw with 8.5 seconds left and the Rams (5-2) avoided a fourth-quarter collapse in escaping with a win over the Colonials (5-4).

Southern went ahead, 49-28 in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter before Freehold Boro turned up its full-court pressure and nearly completed an improbable comeback on the road. The Colonials went on a 12-2 run to pull within 51-40 before a score by Southern sophomore Noah Perna pushed the Southern lead back to 13.

Senior Qua’Mir Everett answered to cut the deficit to 11 and Freehold Boro then forced five turnovers and two missed shots on the next seven Southern possessions, but Freehold Boro scored just twice on its seven trips during that stretch — both layups by senior Aidan Hamlin-Woolfolk.

Perna hit a pair of free throws with 2:01 left to make it 55-46, to which Freehold Boro responded with a 9-1 run to pull within 56-55 with 43.7 seconds to go.
