Shore Conference Tournament
Opening Round
(20) Jackson Memorial 76, (13) Ranney 58
Junior George Boley turned in a magnificent offensive performance with 35 points and seven assists while freshman Mi’Aire Anderson helped key a fourth-quarter explosion that propelled the Jaguars (10-12) past the Panthers (10-9) and into the SCT round of 16 Thursday at No. 4 St. Rose.
Anderson scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, including nine in the fourth quarter, during which Jackson Memorial outscored Ranney, 30-5. The Jaguars also scored the last two points of the third quarter, which flipped a 53-44 deficit on its head with a 32-5 run to close the game. Anderson also grabbed eight rebounds, while Boley further boosted his stat line with six rebounds and four steals.
Junior Jimmy Pappalardo added 10 points and eight rebounds for Jackson Memorial, including seven points in the decisive fourth quarter.
Junior Shaan Nayar scored 19 points to lead Ranney, which entered the fourth quarter 12-for-25 as a team from three-point range, but went 1-for-10 in the final eight minutes to finish 13-for-35. Sophomore Andrew Mardahaev scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half for Ranney and classmate Ben Schaeffer hit all three of his three-point attempts in the first half to account for all nine of his points in the game.
(15) Point Beach 60, (18) Howell 56
Junior Jacob Edgecomb hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:09 left and knocked down a pair of free throws to help put the game away as the Garnet Gulls (16-6) survived a second-half comeback by the Rebels (11-11) to advance to Thursday’s SCT round of 16 at No. 2 CBA.
Edgecomb finished with 16 points, while sophomore teammate Tyler Preston led the way with 19 in the win. Sophomore George Breckenridge also pitched in 14 points for Point Beach.
The Garnet Gulls led, 41-26, with a little more than four minutes to go in the third quarter, at which point Howell started on a 12-2 run to close the quarter and cut Point Beach’s lead to 43-38. Point Beach maintained its lead and owned a 55-48 edge with two minutes left, but Howell struck for eight points in 45 seconds to turn the seven-point deficit into a 56-55 lead — its first lead of the game — with 1:15 to play.
Out of a timeout, Edgecomb found daylight and did not hesitant in pulling a three-ball that found the mark and pushed the Garnet Gulls back in front. After a Point Beach stop on the other end, Edgecomb sank a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left and one more stop by Point Beach effectively ended the game.
Senior Peter Barkauskas led Howell with 17 points and junior Cayden Parker chipped in 15 for Howell. Parker and younger brother, Jay, combined for the eight-point surge that gave Howell the lead, with Cayden and Jay trading three-pointers and Cayden finishing a feed from senior Zach Padilla off a turnover.
(16) Marlboro 51, (17) Barnegat 42
Sophomore Nolan Gong scored 16 of his team’s 22 points in the first half on the way to a game-high 22 for himself as the Mustangs (10-11) held off the Bengals (15-7) to reach the SCT round of 16 Thursday at top-seeded Manasquan.
Barnegat pulled even in the third quarter but Marlboro close the third with an eight-point lead thanks to senior Cole Newman catching fire from beyond the three-point line. Newman scored all 12 of his points on four second-half three-pointers, including three in the third quarter.
Barnegat’s senior trio of Mason Krey, Cole Toddings and Todd Muhammad carried the Bengals scoring with 37 of the team’s 42 points. Krey led Barnegat with 16 points, with Toddings netting 12 and Muhammad pitching in nine.
