Middletown North 19, Keansburg 18
The Lions (2-1, 2-1) edged the Titans (0-2, 0-2) thanks to a standout defensive game from senior safety Ayva Reid, who broke up a pass on an extra-point attempt by Keansburg on the final play of the game to seal the win.
Reid also had two interceptions, including a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown. She also had a 50-yard touchdown run on offense.
Junior quarterback Paige Marrone had a 30-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Sienna Perkins and also converted on an extra point pass to junior Kaelyn Gibson for what proved to be the winning point.
Holmdel 21, Matawan 7
Sophomore quarterback Julia Kern completed 14-of-18 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns as the Hornets (3-0, 3-0) defeated the Huskies (1-1, 1-1). Sophomore quarterback Claire Gillespie completed 10-of-15 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Senior wideout Rachel Yasnowski recorded four receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown. Senior wideout Julia Applegate added four receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown. Junior Amanda Harrington provided a steady pass rush, finishing with two sacks and five tackles. Junior Lia Gordon added a sack and four tackles.
Central
Colts Neck 18, Manalapan 0
Freshman quarterback/safety Daryn Heal ran for a pair of touchdowns and also had two interceptions on defense as the Cougars (2-2, 2-2) blanked the Braves (0-2, 0-2) for their second straight win.
Junior running back Olivia Brown added a rushing touchdown in the win. Colts Neck’s defense registered five interceptions, including one apiece for the freshman trio of Julianna Vacirca, Halle Newman and Georgi Robbins.
Neptune 41, Freehold Boro 13
The Scarlet Fliers (1-0, 1-0) rolled to a win over the Colonials (0-3, 0-3) in their season opener as returning All-Shore star junior Lana Ellington had three interception returns for touchdowns on defense and also ran in a touchdown on offense in her season debut.
Junior running back Nyla Sapp and Kyonna Joseph each added rushing touchdowns in the win.
Red Bank Catholic 27, Shore 13
Sophomore running back Lexi Sinatra and junior Heidi Wierman each scored two touchdowns to send the unbeaten Caseys (3-0, 3-0) past the Blue Devils (1-2, 1-2).
Sinatra caught a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Lilia O’Neal and also ran for a score.
Junior quarterback Grace Ascolese threw for 154 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 33 yards and a score and had an interception on defense in the loss for Shore. Junior wideout Dixie Smith added three catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
South
Howell 18, Brick 12
Senior quarterback Payton Smith completed 15-of-23 passes for 135 yards and rushed seven times for 61 yards including a 2-yard touchdown, as the Rebels (1-2, 1-2) earned their first victory in program history by beating the Green Dragons (1-2, 1-2). Senior Leila Shaw had six receptions for 58 yards and scored on a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Senior Gabia Grigaliunas ran for a 25-yard touchdown and was all over the field on defense, as she recorded seven tackles. Sophomore Gabriella Robertozzi recorded a sack and three tackles. Junior Claire DeCuicies came away with an interception.
