Holmdel Gets Back On Track with Convincing Win Over Constitution Leader Ocean

OCEAN TOWNSHIP — After enduring a difficult stretch following its undefeated start to the season, which included two consecutive losses to sub-500 teams, Holmdel responded in emphatic fashion Tuesday afternoon, overpowering Constitution Division leader Ocean with a complete performance fueled by dominant pitching, disciplined hitting, and relentless offensive pressure.

Behind a masterful outing from senior ace Julia Henderson and a 13-hit offensive attack, the Hornets rolled to a 12-2 victory to improve to 12-3 on the season.

Henderson was outstanding from the opening inning, striking out 14 batters while issuing no walks and allowing just five hits and two runs across seven innings. She consistently kept Ocean hitters off balance, recording strikeouts in every inning and closing the game with three consecutive strikeouts in the seventh.

Holmdel’s offense backed its ace immediately.

On just the first at-bat of the game, sophomore Molly Debias launched a solo home run over the center-field fence to give the Hornets an early 1-0 lead and ignite a four-run opening inning.

Freshman Amanda Tuccillo followed with a single before Henderson, and junior Natalie Clifford added base hits of their own. Senior Emma Vanario started the scoring with a two-run single to center field, and Delaney Savage later drove in another run with a groundout to put Holmdel ahead 4-0 before Ocean came to bat.

The Hornets continued to apply pressure throughout the game with patient at-bats and timely hitting. Holmdel drew eight walks, struck out only three times offensively, and repeatedly capitalized on traffic on the bases.

Tuccillo sparked the lineup all afternoon, finishing 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Henderson, Debias, and Vanario each added multiple hits as Holmdel’s offense produced in nearly every inning.

After several scoreless frames sandwiched around a one-run 4th inning, the Hornets broke the game open in the sixth inning. Sophomore Kylee Lau drew a walk before Debias and Tuccillo delivered consecutive singles. Henderson worked an RBI walk, and Clifford added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-1. Sophomore Olivia Frontera followed with an RBI single later in the inning to make it 8-1.

Holmdel put the finishing touches on the victory with a four-run seventh inning highlighted by a three-run double from Clifford. Henderson also added an RBI single during the inning as the Hornets stretched the advantage to 12-2.

Ocean’s brightest offensive spark came from freshman Taylor Scotto, who went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and both Spartans’ runs. Scotto doubled in the fourth inning and later scored on an error before tripling in the sixth and coming home on a sacrifice fly from junior Ryleigh Cerco.

Junior Nathalie Staten added a double for Ocean, while freshman Ava Sorrentino and sophomore Colleen Zdaneach recorded hits.

Holmdel head coach Nora Bosmans credited her team’s response and attention to detail following recent setbacks.

“Before the game, I reminded the team that tough losses are part of the game, but what defines you is how you respond,” said Bosmans. “Our focus was getting back to playing our style of softball- taking care of the small details, because when you do the little things right, the big moments tend to follow. I thought the girls showed real mental toughness. They came out with energy, set the tone early, and made it clear this was a fresh start. Early-season success is great, but our goal is to be playing our best when tournament time comes, and today was a strong step back toward that standard.”

Both teams return to action on the road on Thursday. Holmdel (12-3) will travel to face Freehold Boro, while Ocean (10-4) heads to Freehold Township.
