October to Remember: Holmdel Caps Remarkable Turnaround with Coaches Cup Championship
NEPTUNE — What began as a frustrating season for Holmdel has turned into an October to remember, and the Hornets made sure to finish the month with a championship.
After losing four of their first five games and missing out on the Shore Conference Tournament, the Hornets have transformed into one of the hottest teams in the Shore Conference. That turnaround reached another milestone Saturday when Holmdel delivered a commanding 4-1 victory over top-seeded Toms River North in the Shore Conference Coaches Cup championship at Summerfield Elementary School.
Four different players found the back of the net for Holmdel, which controlled the pace from the opening whistle and consistently pressured the Mariners’ defense. The victory extended the Hornets’ unbeaten streak to 12 games and capped an undefeated October, a remarkable turnaround for a team that struggled to find its footing in September.
Sophomore Shayla Shah gave Holmdel the early advantage in the 19th minute, finishing from 10 yards out in the middle of the box. The Hornets doubled their lead in the 30th minute when junior Aylen Peters finished off a well-placed pass from senior Shannon Naughton.
Peters was a constant threat along the sideline, using her speed and creativity to stretch the Toms River North defense and create opportunities for her teammates. Her ability to get behind defenders and deliver dangerous crosses kept the Mariners under pressure throughout the afternoon.

“I think she (Peters) can be one of the best players in the Shore,” Holmdel head coach Brianna Brennan said. “She is fast. She is creative and technical. In September, she was getting a feel for the other players, but since then she has settled. She gets behind everybody and has beautiful crosses. The girls thrive off that. They are fighting to get into the box because they know she is going to put it in there.”
Any hopes of a Toms River North comeback took a significant hit almost immediately after halftime.
Just 18 seconds into the second half, Naughton scored her third goal of the season to stretch Holmdel’s advantage to 3-0. The Hornets continued to dictate play before senior Ava Bielan put the game out of reach with six minutes remaining, scoring off a corner kick to make it 4-0.
Toms River North avoided the shutout in the closing minutes when sophomore Chloe Thomas converted a rebound after a free kick struck the crossbar, but the Mariners had no answer for Holmdel’s relentless attack.
While four different players supplied the goals in the championship, one of the biggest reasons behind Holmdel’s remarkable turnaround has been the return of senior Kaitlyn Ng.

After missing the entire 2025 season with a torn ACL, Ng returned to a different role this fall. A defender during her first two seasons, she moved into a holding midfield position, where her presence has helped stabilize the Hornets defensively while giving them another weapon in the attack.
Ng leads Holmdel with seven goals, but Brennan believes her impact goes far beyond what appears on the stat sheet.
“Going into last year we had high hopes and then you have the preseason injury,” Brennan said. “We were disappointed and once I saw her (Ng) in July, and just in the short amount of time how much she developed since the tear, we knew that we had potential to have a special year. It was just getting the right pieces together. She doesn’t naturally play defensive mid, but she does for this team. I do not think we go undefeated in October without her.”
The Hornets have not lost since falling to Ocean on Sept. 15, putting together a 10-0-2 stretch that has completely changed the direction of their season. After struggling defensively early in the year, Holmdel has not surrendered more than one goal in any game during its unbeaten run. Senior goalkeeper Natalie Clifford has recorded five shutouts over that span.

For Ng, who watched from the sidelines a season ago, being part of a championship team has made the turnaround even more meaningful.
“We still got to put a lot of practice in, but I think we are getting there,” Ng said. “We went undefeated in October, so highs are up right now, so we gotta keep on going.”
Holmdel’s resurgence has also created an opportunity to follow a familiar blueprint.
Last season, Shore Regional found its rhythm in October, captured the Coaches Cup championship and carried that momentum into the state tournament, where the Blue Devils went on to win the Group 1 state title.
Now Holmdel hopes to write a similar ending.
The Hornets are currently projected to enter the Central Jersey Group 2 tournament as the No. 10 seed, setting up a first-round matchup against defending sectional champion Allentown. What once looked like a season headed in the wrong direction has suddenly become one filled with possibilities.
For Brennan, the championship was about more than the trophy. It was a reward for a group that refused to let a disappointing September define its season.
“We felt we had good pod play,” Brennan said. “We were really disappointed to not get into the Shore Conference Tournament, which was our goal. So what is next? We were committed to winning this and setting the tone before states. They could have easily gotten frustrated or given up, but instead, every practice we just talked about it and it was our constant motivation to win this and see who we will face in the first round and go from there.”
Holmdel entered October looking to salvage its season. It leaves the month with a championship, 12 straight games without a loss and the belief that its best soccer may still be ahead.
