St. John Vianney’s Ryan Gavrish is the Week 7 Ultimate Tree Service Wrestler of the Week
Every week this winter, Shore Sports Insider will honor standout high school wrestling performances in our Shore Conference Wrestler of the Week poll, presented by Ultimate Tree Service.
Our winner of the Week 7 poll, which encompassed events between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, is St. John Vianney sophomore Ryan “Bubba” Gavrish. The Lancers’ 157-pounder won his first Shore Conference Tournament championship by defeating Raritan senior returning state qualifier Alex Delaurier, 7-2, in the title bout. Seeded second at the weight, he was the only non-No. 1-seeded wrestler to win an SCT title. Gavrish won by fall in his first three bouts before the final. His individual championship was one of six for the Lancers, who rolled to the SCT team title for the second straight season and the third time in program history.
After a standout freshman season where he was a district runner-up and won key matches to help St. John Vianney win the Non-Public B state championship, Gavrish is 20-7 this season for a Lancers team ranked No. 3 in the Shore Conference and No. 7 in New Jersey.
Gavrish and St. John Vianney are the No. 4 seed in the NJSIAA Non-Public A tournament and will host the first two rounds of the tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The Lancers face Pingry in the round of 16 and will then take on the winner between No. 5 Bergen Catholic and No. 12 St. Benedict’s Prep.
