Freehold Twp. 63, Manalapan 60
Sophomore Jake Schultzel scored 22 points and the Patriots (4-3, 1-0) held on to beat the Braves (3-3, 0-1) at home in a match-up of Class A North teams on either side of the cutoff for the Shore Conference Tournament heading into play on Thursday.
Senior Jordan Dulnuan poured in 15 points, while senior Nick Cardone and sophomore Dakota Lasater each chipped in eight for Freehold Township, which led by as many as 10 in the third quarter.
Senior Aidan Sosinov drained a game-high 25 points to lead Manalapan, while junior Dean Aviles added 12, sophomore Cooper Levy netted 10 and sophomore Spencer Schoenfeld contributed eight in the loss.
Manalapan entered the day in the 20th and final spot in the Shore Conference Tournament, which begins on Feb. 11 with a Feb. 8 cutoff. Freehold Township entered at No. 21 and will leapfrog the Braves on power points for the time being with Thursday’s win.
No. 3 CBA 68, No. 8 Ranney 64
Junior Connor Andree posted 22 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots as the Colts (5-2, 2-0) overcame injuries to two of their starters to pull out a win over the Panthers (4-2, 0-1).
Senior Justin Fuerbacher and junior Charlie Marcoullier aggravated ankle injuries they initially suffered in the same game — a win over West Morris Central on Dec. 27. The two players missed just one full game, but both left Thursday’s game — Fuerbacher in the first quarter and Marcoullier in the third — and did not return.
Senior Kevin Pikiell scored 17 points and sophomore David Buley chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Marcoullier contributed 10 points before leaving with the injury.
Senior MeSean Williams led three Ranney players in double-figure scoring with 16 points and also added three assists and three steals. Junior Shaan Nayar scored 15 points on five three-pointers, with four coming in the fourth quarter, when the Panthers cut a 16-point deficit to three. Sophomore Brody Mauro also poured in 12 points to go with five rebounds.
No. 10 Colts Neck 65, Marlboro 54
Senior Bryce Belcher and junior Dillon Younger each scored 15 points as part of a balanced effort that carried the Cougars (4-2, 1-0) to a win over the Mustangs (3-7, 0-2).
Senior Lukas Sloane contributed 12 points and three players — senior Jack Fried, senior Dan Buoncore and freshman Nate Sloane — scored seven points apiece.
Sophomore Dylan McEwan scored a game-high 20 points to lead Marlboro.
Class A Coastal
Red Bank Catholic 58, Middletown South 41
Senior Ryan Prior scored a game-high 20 points thanks to a 9-for-10 night from the free-throw line and the Caseys (6-3, 1-1) rode a dominant fourth quarter and 16-for-17 free-throw shooting to a win over the Eagles (5-4, 0-2).
Junior Jake Frankel added 10 points and junior James Hankowski netted nine on three three-pointers for Red Bank Catholic, which outscored Middletown South, 21-5, in the fourth quarter after taking a 37-36 lead after three.
Junior Matt Trimble scored 14 points and classmate Beckett Oliver chipped in 12 to lead Middletown South.
No. 5 Rumson-Fair Haven 54, Holmdel 48
Junior Luke Cruz scored 18 points and senior teammate David Carr added 16 as the Bulldogs (6-1, 2-0) turned the tide on a six-point halftime deficit to foil the Hornets (4-4, 1-1).
Senior C.J. Karis scored 18 points to lead Holmdel, which bounced back from an early 11-1 deficit by outscoring Rumson, 17-5, in the second quarter to take a 24-18 lead at halftime. Junior Jack Vallillo also netted 13 points in the loss.
No. 6 Red Bank 61, St. John Vianney 42
Seniors Ryan Fisher and Zayier Dean each scored 14 points and the Bucs (9-0, 2-0) beat the Lancers (4-6, 0-2) for their ninth straight win to open the season, making them the last remaining undefeated team in the Shore Conference.
Sophomore Will Galligan added 10 points for Red Bank, which staked its claim to a 13-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Nick Mejia scored 11 points on three three-pointers to lead St. John Vianney’s scoring effort.
Class B North
Long Branch 73, Asbury Park 45
Cameron DeJesus erupted for 30 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Green Wave (1-7, 1-1) rolled through the Blue Bishops (10-6, 0-1) for their first win of the season.
Joseph Corely pitched in 12 points and six rebounds and Josh Guzman added 11 points for Long Branch. Quentin Fisher also contributed eight points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals in the win.
Ocean 62, Shore 46
Junior Aidan Saint Louis scored a career-high 31 points and the Spartans (2-7, 2-0) handed the Blue Devils (7-1, 1-1) their first loss of the season while also winning their second straight following an 0-7 start.
Junior Vernon Taylor added 13 points and classmate Niall Tantrum pitched in eight for Ocean, which put up 20 points in the first quarter and outscored Shore, 30-17, in the second half.
Senior Bryce Crowe scored 13 points and junior Andrew Barham chipped in 11 to lead Shore.
No. 7 Freehold Boro 76, Monmouth 41
Senior Brian Tassey scored the 1,000th point of his career and finished with 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists to lead the Colonials (6-4, 1-0) to a rout of the Falcons (0-9, 0-2).
Tassey completed a three-point play in the second quarter to reach the milestone and finished the game with 1,006 points. Senior Qua’Mir Everett chipped in 14 points, junior Mike Cush netted 13 and classmate Aidan Hamlin-Woolfolk added 12 points and eight rebounds for Freehold Boro.
Junior Judah Uter led Monmouth with 16 points.
Class B Coastal
Henry Hudson 80, Matawan 65
Senior Jack Fitzpatrick scored 19 points in his season debut and combined with sophomore teammate JoJo Newell to power a big third quarter that sealed an Admirals (5-3, 1-1) win over the Huskies (2-7, 0-2).
Fitzpatrick went 11-for-13 from the free-throw line and had his best stretch of shooting in the third quarter, when he hit a pair of three-pointers and scored nine points. Newell, meanwhile, scored 11 of his 15 points in the third, during which Henry Hudson outscored Matawan, 25-16 to go up, 60-41.
Juniors Michael Fitzpatrick and Billy Quinn each scored 10 points, senior Phinn Kozic poured in nine and junior Blakely Smith chipped in eight in the win.
Senior Amir Martinez scored 22 points and junior Ben Morales chipped in 14 to lead Matawan.
Raritan 51, Keansburg 48
Junior James Dillon led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and the Rockets (4-4, 2-0) held off a challenge from the Titans (3-4, 0-2). Freshman Mario Diamantis poured in 10 points and dealt out three assists, while sophomore Eric Berg netted eight points for Raritan.
Middletown North 45, Keyport 42
Junior Colin Byrne led the offensive effort with 18 points and the Lions (6-4, 2-0) edged the Red Raiders (6-2, 1-1) in a battle for early-season positioning atop the Class B Coastal standings.
Senior Brayden Marcotte added nine points and junior Eddie Lopez and sophomore Nate Tyburczy scored eight apiece for Middletown North. Senior Nico Dispenza and junior Kai Arrington each scored 15 points to lead Keyport, with senior Andrei Matthews netting eight in the loss.
Class B South
Pinelands 57, Toms River East 30
Senior Ty Kline accounted for more than half of Pinelands’ scoring with 29 points and also threw in 10 rebounds and five assists to lead a one-sided win for the Wildcats (6-2, 2-0) over the Raiders (2-6, 0-1).
Senior Brady Fence and sophomore Cayden Lucas each pitched in eight points for Pinelands.
Non-Division
Lakewood 53, Lacey 50
Junior Cris Rosario pumped in a career-high 35 points to carry the Piners (2-2) to a win over the Lions (2-5). Rosario did most of his damage in the first (11 points) and third (10) quarters and hit the 35-point mark thanks to 15 made field goals.
Junior Ronny Cuevas added 10 points for Lakewood. Senior Anthony Mazza led Lacey with 17 points, with senior Jon Stabile and Frank Smith each adding 13 in the loss. Stabile also contributed 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Jackson Liberty 64, Toms River South 63 (OT)
Sophomore Aidan Kelly poured in a career-high 31 points and the Lions (2-3) rebounded from squandering a 13-point fourth-quarter lead by battling past the Indians (2-6) in overtime.
Senior Corey Harnett added 13 points for Jackson Liberty which led, 49-36, going into the fourth quarter before Toms River South outscored the Lions, 22-9, in the final eight minutes of regulation.
Juniors Shane Gambarony and Kharii Pringle each scored 17 points and classmate Jacob Myers threw in 15 to lead Toms River South.
Wednesday, Jan. 8
Non-Division
Neptune 40, Raritan 36 (2 OT)
Senior JayVion Rogers scored nine of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and seniors Darren Fonrose and David Boone each made key tying baskets to deliver the Scarlet Fliers (7-1) a win over the Rockets (3-4) — their fifth straight win and seventh win in their first eight games.
Rogers found Fonrose for a game-tying layup as the clock expired on the fourth quarter, sending the two teams into overtime tied, 30-30. With Neptune trailing, 32-30, in the final minute of overtime, senior Cameron Stukes stole the ball and got it up to Boone for the tying score with 22 seconds left. Stukes then hit Fonrose for a layup to open the scoring in the second overtime.
Senior Xavier Nunez and freshman Mario Diamantis each scored nine points to lead Raritan.
