Class C North

Red Bank 28, Neptune 20

Senior defensive back Kaden Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 54 yards in the final minute to seal a comeback victory for the Buccaneers (3-3, 2-2) over the Scarlet Fliers (1-6, 0-4).

Neptune struck first in the opening minutes, as senior Caleb Brown-Mason tiptoed the sideline for a 13-yard rushing touchdown. Red Bank tied the game in the second quarter, after a leaping grab by sophomore receiver Sam Schroeder on a jump ball from senior quarterback Brett Laude. But the Scarlet Fliers took the lead back in the final minutes of the first half on a three-yard plunge by senior running back Kingston Pinnock.

They extended their lead to two scores in the final seconds of the third quarter, as senior wideout Daaron Lynch made a catch on the sideline and crossed the pylon for a 26-yard touchdown.

But the fourth quarter was all Buccaneers. Laude capped off another efficient drive with a nine-yard jump ball to senior wideout Chris Doody to bring them within a score. Then, with under three minutes to play, senior running back Joe Henry scored from three yards out to put Red Bank in front, 21-20. Neptune had another chance to score, and worked its way to midfield, but Jackson’s pick-six ended the scoring chance and punctuated a come-from-behind win.

Class C South

Freehold Boro 36, Lakewood 8

The Colonials (1-6, 1-3) defeated the Piners (0-7, 0-4) in an afternoon Class C South battle.

Freehold Boro opened the game with an efficient drive down the field, capped by an acrobatic throw-and-catch from sophomore quarterback Adrian KrKuti to junior wideout Prince Taylor off a deflection. The Colonials’ defense forced a stop, and a good punt return by Taylor set up the offense in plus territory. KrKuti and Taylor connected down the field again three plays later to set up a first-and-goal, setting up a one-yard sneak by KrKuti for the second score of the first quarter.

KrKuti notched his second rushing touchdown of the day with a four-yard scramble early in the second quarter. With 20 seconds left before halftime, Freehold Boro turned a Lakewood fumble into more points, as KrKuti fired a ten-yard score to senior Michael Tracey in the back of the end zone to head into the locker room up 27-0.

With a minute left in the third quarter, the Colonials’ special teams executed as KrKuti had a punt downed at the one-yard line, and their defensive line stuffed a run play in the end zone for a safety one play later. Sophomore returner Reed Bennett took the ensuing free kick 45 yards for another touchdown.

Lakewood’s lone score came on a 29-yard touchdown run (and two-point conversion) from senior quarterback Rias Sanchez as time expired in the fourth quarter.

New Egypt 48, Keyport 34

Junior quarterback Thomas Marabuto accounted for five touchdowns, as the Warriors (4-3, 3-1) topped the Red Raiders (1-5, 1-3) in a shootout.

Marabuto rushed for touchdowns of five, 17, and 52 yards, in addition to throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Joe Snyder and a 17-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Charlie Girard. He also ran for a two-point conversion.

Junior running back Liam Trukowski ran for a two-yard touchdown in the win, while freshman kicker Elijah Kennedy drilled a 34-yard field goal.

Class D North

Asbury Park 24, Long Branch 13

The Blue Bishops (2-5, 1-3) notched their first division victory as the offense — led by sophomore running back Kevan Crawford’s three touchdowns — heated up in the second half against the Green Wave (2-5, 1-3).

Long Branch opened up the scoring late in the second quarter on a two-yard run by senior running back Avery Colon, but Asbury Park’s defense quickly struck back two possessions later after freshman defensive back Xavier Liranzo picked off a screen pass for a touchdown to tie the game at 6-6 going into halftime.

Early in the third quarter, the Blue Bishops broke the tie with a quick score on a one-yard sneak by Crawford, spurred by a long kickoff return down to the Green Wave five-yard line. Asbury Park added another to take a two-possession lead minutes later after recovering an errant Long Branch snap. Crawford scored again two plays later from 13 yards out.

The Green Wave then marched down the field and cut the deficit to one possession in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, as senior running back Julian Otey took a reverse for a four-yard touchdown. The Blue Bishops’ defense stood tall from there, and their offense added another score in the final minutes to seal the win on Crawford’s third touchdown of the day from 11 yards out.

Manalapan 32, No. 10 St. John Vianney 29

Senior kicker Brandon Kaplan converted on a game-winning 17-yard field goal with under 50 seconds left to help lead the Braves (3-4, 1-3) over the Lancers (2-5, 1-3) and snap a four-game losing streak.

Senior quarterback Cameron Desfosse threw two first-half touchdown passes, a 41-yard strike to senior tight end Ethan Fogelstrom to open the scoring and a 22-yard score to senior tight end Anthony Relay to take a 22-15 lead at halftime.

In the second half, St. John Vianney responded with two touchdowns to take the lead early in the third quarter, but Manalapan senior running back Nick Palmieri ran for a game-tying 30-yard touchdown midway through the fourth. The Braves’ defense stood tall and got the ball back to the offense, where they drove to the doorstep of the goal line before Kaplan hit the game-winning kick. They got one more stop in the final seconds, recording a sack to end the game.

No. 12 Wall 14, No. 6 Holmdel 13

The Crimson Knights (3-3, 2-2) outlasted a late rally from the Hornets (4-3, 1-3), as all three Class A North games were decided by three points or fewer on Friday night.

Wall opened the scoring with under five minutes to play in the first half, as senior quarterback Franny Scaramellino lofted a 38-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Johnny Partusch as he was hit. Senior defensive end Shea Fagan intercepted a pass at the goal line to end the first half, sending the Crimson Knights into the locker room with a 7-0 lead.

They opened the second half with an eight-minute drive, including a red-zone fourth-down conversion, and took a 14-0 lead on a two-yard run by junior Jesse Roth.

But Holmdel fought back. Sophomore quarterback Tommy Fletcher got the Hornets on the board with a 60-yard touchdown to sophomore wideout Charlie Murphy to pull within 14-7 with seven minutes to play. They got back into the red zone in the final minute, and Fletcher ran for a four-yard score with 1:06 left, but a go-ahead two-point conversion run was stuffed by Wall’s defense. The Crimson Knights fell on the ensuing onside kick attempt to seal the win.

 No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 31, No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven 28

The Caseys (5-2, 4-0) notched a thrilling rivalry win over the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1) in the final seconds, clinching at least a share of the Class A North title for the second straight year.

Sophomore kicker Simon Picinich kicked a 25-yard field goal with 1:48 to play, which would become the game-winning score. With no timeouts, Rumson-Fair Haven marched down the field and set up a 30-yard field goal of its own, but the kick fell just wide left.

RBC sophomore running back Gabe Kemp opened up the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown run three minutes into the game. The Bulldogs responded with an efficient drive capped off by a two-yard score by senior running back Ryder Izzo.

Rumson took the lead midway through the second quarter, as junior quarterback Brady Williams found senior wideout Casey Moore on a six-yard strike. But the Caseys tied it right back up on a 31-yard run by sophomore quarterback Rahmir Rivera. Rivera then found junior Ethan Kennedy for a 51-yard score with under 90 seconds left in the first half to take the lead back. Junior defensive back Jason Berecsky picked off a pass to stop a Bulldogs drive to end the half.

Kemp put RBC up by two scores with a three-yard run in the third quarter, but Rumson fired back with a rushing and passing touchdown from Williams, finding junior wideout Michael Capra with seven minutes left to tie the game, setting up the photo finish.

No. 7 Southern 27, No. 5 Toms River North 19

The Rams (6-1, 3-1) outlasted the Mariners (5-2, 2-2) for a victory with big state playoff seeding implications.

Each team flew out of the gates with three touchdowns of over 50 yards in the first four minutes of the game. Senior receiver-turned-quarterback Wesley Tanner opened the scoring for Toms River North with a 59-yard touchdown run, followed by a 77-yard touchdown pass on a screen from Southern senior quarterback Carson Abbato to senior wideout Chris Raub. The Mariners responded once again on the ensuing drive, as senior running back Lucas Elias scored on a toss play from 70 yards out.

From there, though, the scoring slowed down a bit, and the Rams took control.

Late in the first half, junior linebacker Lukas Iliescu picked off a pass over the middle and took it back nearly 40 yards to the three-yard line, and his twin brother Niko punched in the score on the very next play to tie the game at 13 apiece, the eventual halftime score.

Senior running back Levi Foote gave Southern the lead for good in the third quarter, capping off another strong drive with a 21-yard score.

The Mariners drew to within a point in the early minutes of the fourth quarter on a six-yard dart from sophomore quarterback Frank Slaughter to sophomore wideout Jazir Frazer — aided by another explosive run from Elias earlier in the drive — but the Rams blocked the game-tying extra-point attempt.

Foote added an insurance score on the very next drive from 20 yards out after a long kickoff return.

Central responded immediately with a ten-yard run by senior quarterback CJ Yates to cap off an explosive drive to tie the game with 2:20 to play.

But the Wildcats got the last chance and took full advantage of it. Two long passes down the field from senior quarterback JJ Jenkins set up Clark’s second score of the night, coming from three yards out with under a minute to play. Their defense got one final stop to seal the victory.
