Shore Sports Insider Girls Soccer Top 10, Sept. 30
Week four in the books and once again, there is a new number one team in the Shore Conference. Expect the top 10 to change every week with the parity of play this year. The Shore Conference Tournament is getting closer and more teams are showing they can contend to be one of the final four teams standing. Class A North has the top four teams, but Wall, Point Boro, Central and Lacey are in the conversation with the top teams in A North. After last week, Point Boro is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Shore Conference.
Shore Sports Insider Girls Soccer Week 4 Rankings
1. Middletown South (7-1-1) Last Week: 2 – Middletown South has looked like one of the most complete teams four weeks into the season. The Eagles played three strong teams last week and came out of the week 2-0-1. They opened the week with a 4-0 victory over division rival Manasquan. Freshman goalie Julianna Fiore posted her fourth straight shutout. Middletown South followed that with a 3-3 draw with No. 6 Red Bank Catholic. Both teams led at one point during regulation. The Eagles scored the equalizer with under five minutes to play to send it to overtime. Middletown South ended the week scoring three goals in the second half to defeat Bridgewater-Raritan 3-2 in a non-conference game. Middletown South plays two SCT Group games this week, hosting Asbury Park on Monday and traveling to No. 9 Toms River South on Saturday. Tuesday they travel to Shore Regional in a non-divisional game.
2. Howell (7-1) Last Week: 1 – Howell fell victim to the number-one-ranking curse. The Rebels had a dominant second half but fell 2-0 to No. 6 Red Bank Catholic. Howell rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Jackson Memorial in a non-divisional game. Junior Leila Shaw posted her fifth shutout of the season for Howell. Howell hosts Pinelands on Monday in a SCT Group game and travels to Trinity Hall on Wednesday in a Class A North match-up. Howell holds a slight edge in the division standings, so a win over Trinity Hall will keep the pressure on the rest of the division.
